Moving to California

Posted Wed Apr 18, 2007 9:51 pm GMT by Ben4040
I am moving to California next month. I am going to be 2 hours from Reno. Does anyone know any nice casinos there for poker? I thought of the Grand Sierra only because it is a stop on the WPT. They have a series of tournaments there the week I get there. I might play on May 15 or May 16 in the Spring Pot of Gold tourney.

Any other suggestions?

Moving to Folsom I assume from your info?

Jackson Rancheria Casino is about 45 min or an hour away from Folsom; they have a pretty nice new Poker room. They usually have $3/$6 limit, $1/$2 NL and $2/$5 NL... they may have some bigger games now, too.

There are a few nice cardrooms in Sacramento, which is also close by. Lucky Derby is a pretty nice place that has weekly tournaments and a big NL game. Capitol Casino in the north part of downtown Sac has the biggest limit games in the area ($10/$20 or so). Cache Creek casino is the biggest room in the area, but that's a good 1.5-2 hour drive from Folsom out west. They have a 28-table room with a lot of games, both limit and NL... not a lot of non-Hold'em games spread out here unfortunately.

Both the Bay 101 and Reno have WPT events every year (both are around a 2-hour drive from Folsom). Lucky Chances is somewhat close to the Bay Area as well, and they have some big games as well. Biggest tournament action you're liable to see is in the Reno area; I know the Reno Hilton/Grand Sierra and Peppermill have a few annual tournies.

Hope you enjoy California as much as I do. Folsom is a fairly quiet town, but it's nice, and you can usually find stuff to do, either there, or in Sac, or in any of the other 200 suburbs around there.

I just discovered there is a card club in Folsom, too, I think attached to a bar.

Also, there are some pretty good small stakes tournies at Colusa Casino about 75 minutes north of Sac. Friday nights they have a $2k guarantee with a $60 entry that frequently has an overlay... generous chip stacks and decent blind structure. Saturdays there is a $100 tourney with a $5k guarantee that has twice the stack of the $60 tourney and longer blind levels. Definitely worth the trip, as most players are terrible.
