2 hands = 4Xbuyin .

True story:
Buddy of mine won 10 buy-ins in an omaha game before he realized he could only use 2 cards in his hand.
Morale:
Omaha swings. alot.

Yeah, tell me about it. On my other table I barely managed to stay even. My sets kept cracking, my flopped nut str8's where worth less etc..
I'm actually playing very scared, as you can see from the above 2 hands.
Unless I have the nuts + redraws to the nuts I try to keep the pot small. If I have a set and there is draws, I just bet the min to make it unprofitable for them to chase (So a little over half the pot usually) I don't pot it every time I have a vulnerable nut simply because I don't want to have a big decision on the river when the flush or str hit and my set doesn't look to good. If I managed to keep the pot small, it is easier to call their river bets...
But the fish are plenty, and if you are willing to sit tight and play nuts only, and if your BR can stand the swings - I think there is profit to be made here.
Still, NL is my game, this was just a little breather and a nice Br builder

I don't think Omaha is really a raising game preflop, although I do raise every now and then to mix it up.
Didn't like your hand ATT8 one bit, but it worked out for you. Big pots and bluffing generally don't work so I proably wouldn't be putting them on a bluff and by the river there are a few straights she could have backed in to.
I don't really think ATT8 is a strong enough hand anyway to be playing in EP, especially as it's not suited, but I don't really know about playing the PL25 or 50 games, so perhaps it's fine.
Nice haul.

Yeah, down at the micro's you get at least 60% people seeing the flop.
And most of them will call one raise with A4C...
So I actually play most pairs from any position, unless the table is aggressive. (half tables all the pots are limps, half there is always a raise)
Anyway, been having some bad Holdem lately. Managed to lose 4 buyins in two days so decided to sit in Omaha again today. 2 sessions later and I'm 8 buyins up. Damn, I can't even lose that amount so fast in holdem...
Gotta love it. When you run good you get payed. Flopped quads twice. Though in unraised pot and couldn't get any action.
But my flopped boats got paid. My trips rivered boat got paid. My nut str8 got paid and I'm a happy camper.
People really have time to get away from any 2 pairs regardless of the board texture. And some of them think they play Holdem and play TPTK like its the nuts.
When I run good, I love omaha.

I usually play this hand much slower, but this villain was a real maniac. A couple of hands ago he called my AI with A high and some kind of a gut draw. So I gave him no credit.

Enjoy that while you can at the micro limits, because hand selection like that (in some of those hands) simply won't fly as you move up to face competent players.
Posted Tue May 29, 2007 4:16 am GMT by MrDarling
Yeah , and I only play 30% of my hands...
Like I said I play most pocket pairs, espcially if they come with a suited A. I play most mid+ connectors (ie 4 to the str) regardless of suit, since I'm not inlove with small flushes.
If there is a raise I'll tighten up a lot depending on the raiser, then my hand need to be draw heavy with nut potential.
Though I'm still pretty loose PF, I'm very tight post flop. Since loads of people see the flop I only draw to the nuts and am very careful with 2nd nuts.
For example a hand I didn't post I had a multi draw HU on the flop (nut str + K high flush) Villain potted and I just called. turn gave me the nuts. And again villain potted. I hated it, but decided to call. the river got villain pushing AI, and I decided he is going to have to show me the nut flush. He didn't, but I would have happily check it down to SD.
i've seen too many players bust with the 2nd and even the 10th nuts in this game.
BTW, been watching some of the high stakes omaha on FT. Its much sicker there. I guess the game changes a lot once you know most flops will be HU. All of a sudden over pairs is a strong hand.

Overplaying pairs smaller than Jacks can be a real problem in Omaha, as flopping set over set is a lot more common than it is in Hold'em, and having the "underfull" house (ie you have 88 on a J-J-8-6-5 board) can leave you short many times because of all the relevant J-x holdings, whereas having an "overfull" house leaves you in a lot better position (ie you have KK on a K-J-J-9-7 board). Gotta play small sets cautiously.
I'm not saying don't play the small pairs, but I'm probably going to play them in strong combinations with other cards, like suited Aces as you mentioned or decent double-suited 3-straights (ie 8 7 7 6 ), where I flop a lot of quality draws with good blocking potential.
That's kind of the paradox in Omaha though. It's really only profitable against bad players, in which case you don't have to be nearly as selective with your hands. In tough games, it's very rare to see all the money go in where it is not very close to a 50-50, and Omaha tournaments... well, let's just say I don't think much of the relevance of skill in Omaha tournaments (but then again, somehow Phil Ivey, Sam Farha, Rafi Amit, and Robert Williamson seem to dominate the game so thoroughly).

Lucksackery and a 'never let up' attitude probably. Though really, hand-reading and being able to exploit your opponent is, as always, hugely important. I'm not much of a PLO player and the game does get pretty annoying and coinflippy, but because of that, being able to figure out how and when to shut opponents out of the pot, pot manipulation, and other fairly subtle and fairly boring concepts seem to play a huge role.
I've even noticed from my own limited experiences in PLO and PLO8 that so many of the bets/raises I make carry a HUGE amount of 'other factors' when compared to NLHE: my thought processes in omaha, even PLO, are more similar to games like stud and even FLHE... lots of jostling for position, taking advantage of position/relative position, shutting people out to increase my equity, or sometimes keeping them involved to make my hand work better, yadda yadda. This probably goes even moreso for tournaments: with how closely hands run in value, taking advantage of favorable TOURNAMENT situations becomes of the utmost importance, and 'playing your cards right' falls somewhat by the wayside.
Okay I'm done with this rambly post, though I really feel I should've kept it going.
