First hand - small pp. Blinds battle

Posted Wed Apr 25, 2007 11:13 am GMT by MrDarling
My first hand on the table.
Folded to the SB who complete. I look down at a small pair and raise 4XBB ($1) SB complete.
Flop is 25Q rainbow. SB lead $5 into a $2 pot.

What kind of a hand can he have to play like this.

btw, he has half a stack, I'm full stacked.
Does anyone call?

His hand: 'cards' Smile

Just fold, there is no need to get tricky or think tricky on the first hands in. I'd probably just check my BB in the first place so early on a table, its ok to get the lay of the land first.

Fold.

He could have called preflop with Qxs, Q8o+, maybe suited a suited 5. Small pair = 33/44 or 66/77?

I don't know. It doesn't make sense.
A pocket pair that behave like that on the flop will probably c/r PF. A Q will probably c/r me on the flop. A smaller pair, they usually min bet, or at least a normal bet.

I decided to call and see what happened on the turn which was a K. And now dude push for the rest of his chips ($6 into $12 pot)

OK, I'll admit, my pair was the smallest possible. Smile

Newbs don't c/r super-often.

Still, there's no reason to play here. Pick a better spot.

PP two over-cards on the flop, missed my set, villain bets, I fold.

Yikes, if you have 66-77 I can conceive continuing on with this hand if you know your opponent is a retard - but you dont because you are new to the table - and you are getting 1.4:1 odds, which is not even close to what you probably need based on his range of hands (which include any Qx, KQ, A5, maybe A4... and like what... a 10% chance he can't beat an underpair)

The pf raise was a bad idea for a table of villains we know nothing about. Low pps are really only good for hitting a set on the flop, which we have roughly a 10% chance of. Raising this heads up pf would most often have been a mistake even if we knew our opponents style.

Should be a very easy fold now.

I forgot to mention that this is 6max. Where I almost always raise my pp.

Still I am more interested in trying to figure out villain play then my own.

Like I tried to hint, my pocket pair was indeed 2's which made my play very easy.
Was it anything else then 2's I would have folded.
Am not sure how I would have played it if I had 7's-9's or even J's.

The tone of your posts suggested you had missed: I had assumed by lowest possible pp, that you held 3s.

Still stand by post above, just obviously remove the easy fold remark. lol

He's betting 5 into 8. Nothing significant there as we know nothing of villains style. The only thing we know here, is that he knows nothing of us either. We hit our set, and I would fear that since we're an unknown to him that even a min raise may scare him off the pot. I would likely call it at this point, hoping for him to offer up more on the turn. I'd be looking now at how to get myself all in without scaring out a completely unknown player. A call here puts us 9 in, of our 25, which is well on our way.

As to what he could be betting with, I'd almost say it would be pure guesswork at this point. We just don't know enough. He could just be betting we missed with an AK or Ax, or he could hold a Q. AQ is the obvious possibility since he called another 3bb in to see the flop, but I can't see how at this point you could confidently declare his hand. If he made/makes a higher set... I tend to pay them (probably too much lol).
