Omaha rules

I play in a poker game weekly, and we play holdem and omaha. the question comes up every week how it is properly played. Holdem is 2 cards, play one from hand and up to 4 on the board, but how is it in omaha? 2 cards 3 on the board? or can you just play 1 from your hand?

for example, hand last night
5 cards on board (suit didn't matter)
6,5,8,9,10 or something similar to that.

I play
6, 7 from my hand, Straight 6-10

He plays
J, J and calls straight.

does he have a straight or a pair of jacks?
and how would this play if he played like J, 5 or somthing like that, not being able to make a straight with his cards but having 1 of 4 to a straight?

We are mostly wondering, in Omaha do you need to play EXACTLY 2 cards from your hand, or is it like holdem where you can play 1? How bout on a flush, need 2 suited in your hand if the board is showing 4 or 5 suited cards?

If you happen to have a link to this that would be great, I am sure that someone will question this.
Thanks

Poker is a five card game. This means exactly five cards count every time.

In hold'em you can you 0, 1 or 2 cards from your hand and the appropiate number from the board.

In omaha you use exactly two from your hand and exactly three from the board. So in the example where your friend had JJxx you should have won. He only gets to use three cards from the board.

Thats what most of us thought, is there a reason behind being able to use 0,1,2 in holdem but not in omaha?

probably the same reason poker is a 5 cards game. It is just a part of the rules.

Just to recap , in Holdem you don't have to use your own cards. sometimes the Board win and everyone split.

In the hand you mentioned, the board was "6,5,8,9,10" or something like that.

Your opponent held J,J, and called straight. In addition to having to use two cards from his hand, he needed a 7 or a Q to make a straight. From the info you provided, he had neither one. Confused

Because if you could use fewer cards than 2 in Omaha, it would basically be like playing with a ton of wild cards, and there would be almost no showdown value for any hand but the nuts. Hand ranges would be so vast that there's no reason to put money in without some huge hand.
