good play or fish move episode 1....

Posted Fri Apr 27, 2007 8:08 pm GMT by Ensano
after a bit of a poker hiatus (spelling) for about 2-3 weeks (bet no one even noticed i was gone)... i made a trip to the casino and this situation came up...

just moved to a new table and I have full buying ($200 1/2NL)so no reads

sit down in the CO and post... and dealt QJo...

EP raises 4xbb to 8$ and folds around to me... getting 2:1 and most likely heads up I call..
so does BB, meh...

flop comes 10 9 10 rainbow... pot 30$

EP bets out 20$...

now assuming average player's range this could be anything from an overpair to a cbet from overcards so I have 2 options (well 3 but with an open ender can i really be laying it down this fast)

option 1: call and chase the draw which also sets up my favorite bluff (c/c on flop raising on turn like a set would)

option 2: raise and put him to the test right then and there...

I decide to go with option 1 because I also get to see how he reacts to my call.... BB folds

turn 2o... pot 70$...

villian then bets 20$... to me this looked like a weak 2nd barrel and decided to fire back so I raised it up to 60$...

now some people would say I should've raised more but there's no flush draw and I kinda wanted it to look like i wanted a call... not to mention i'm only giving 3.75:1...

without much though he calls...

river blank... pot 150$...

villian checks....

I have 0 showdown value now so the only move is bet... how much and why?

Push. You get the most fold equity, anything less is kinda meaningless with your stack sizes, villain covers yes?

It's either that or just give up.

The main reason I don't like raising on the turn with this type of hand is that when you do get called and you miss, you have to go out on a huge limb to try and win the pot. To make this move, I usually need to know the person pretty well, and to have a little bit better draw than this. If you ARE going to raise the turn, I prefer raising more, because you're giving him such an attractive price. Of course, a move this sophisticated is likely to be lost on the average 1/2 NL player, hence my comments above.

In position, I frequently like raising the flop much more, because that gives us a lot more options in the later streets of the hand.
