good play or fish move episode 2....

Posted Fri Apr 27, 2007 8:22 pm GMT by Ensano
this happened day before yesterday and a freeroll tourney at a local bar... about 25 people 1st gets a 25$ gift certificate at the bar...

10 min into tourney so no reneral reads... stacks about 16 000 blinds 100/200 7 handed...

in the CO with A5 hearts... everyone limps as do I and we see a family pot 7 ways... everyone is more or less even... tourney has been running 10 min..

flop Qh 10s Jh... pot 1400

SB checks, bb bets 1500, call, call, and button calls out of turn then when asked to wait hovered his hand over the pot with the chips in it for the call...
I call... button drops his chips in and SB folds...

turn Q... pot 8900...

BB bets 2500, MP calls getting 5.6:1 on my money I don't really want to call so much of my stack on a draw and figuring I can also rep the set I push for a total of 12 300 (9800) more)...

BB thinks for a while then makes the call and mp folds... BB shows Q3clubs...

river Q... pot 36000...

my friends started to razz me about my play, but I told him had he laid it down it would've been the best bluff of year... not to mention if i hit I'd have a huge stack to swing around the rest of the night...

thoughts?... just call the turn?... push on the flop?... fold preflop?.. raise preflop?

Either pushing the flop or just calling the turn are both preferable to pushing the turn IMO, because I don't think there's enough fold equity when you're in a large, multi-way pot with such a dangerous board like that (even in a limped pot). You're going to get called by any Q, not to mention any stronger hand.

I might try this play heads-up if only 2 or 3 went to the flop. But in a family pot with a lot of action on multiple streets, this type of semi-bluff just does not succeed as a bluff (not counting when you make your hand and win) to be very profitable.

It really isn't that much of your stack, all things considered. You would have invested 4200 in the hand to win a lot more, so even if you miss, you're left with over 11k, which is pretty big in relation to the blinds.

im pushing on the flop here, with at least 9, prob 13 outs is a great opp to get your chips in the middle n put the pressure on ur opponents. if u get acall from a qj (possible) u are only a slight dog, worst case is if villan has aq (unlikely) or k9(possible) (ak very unlikely)

yeah you're right... calling would prob be my best option here by 1) keeping dead money in (both a k and a heart give me the nuts) and 2) risking relatively little while getting really good odds to draw....

my stack would've benn 9800 with blinds 100/200 going up every 20min... lot's of room and time to play had I missed on the river, while if i hit i was either getting villians stack of at least a good sized value bet...
