Tips for live MTT with quick blinds

Posted Wed May 16, 2007 7:02 am GMT by MrDarling
I finally found a place where I can play live poker.
A small MTT - €10 buyin. Max 27 people.
Blinds start 25/50 change every 15 min. starting stack is 2000.
as you can imagine its about an orbit per level.

How should one play this - Extra tight or extra loose?

the play is like normal €10 buyin MTT. You see players who can't fold A high. Players go into raising war battle on a AKJ flop with Axo etc.. Few bluffs, a lot of chases. One or two aggressive players - but no real maniacs

My tip: Save your money...

You get better odds playing roulette and betting on a Number than winning cash in such a tourney.

If I play, I would play it like this: just play monsters in lvls 1-3 and then switch to aggressive style. The most annoying thing is, when you build a bigstack and get carddead for 4 levels and your stack is blinded away. or lets say that your stack wont be large enough to just steal the blinds.

Really... you do not learn anything there! And the odds for cashing are so miserable, that its not worth it.

save 2 times the buy in... deposit it on fulltilt and play a 30$ MTT... thats better I think Wink

Well, since its the only live game I find - I'll play it.

so far I went twice.

First time we played 3 s&g : busted out quickly from the first one due to bad play. We formed a loser table and played a 5 player s&g in which I split first with someone. and I bubbled in the last one . All in all - €5 lost

Second time - I busted early again due to really bad play. then I played even worse cash game. In the 2nd S&g (11 players) I managed to get 3rd where my AQs was busted by KTo (he rivered a str8) total lost for the day - €10

So basically I'm having lots of fun playing poker and I keep my lost to min.

I think next time I'll play real tight until its short handed and hope to get some decent cards.

i understand what you're saying about willing to play because you're still having fun so even if you lose 5-10$ it's still worth it...

just play premium hands untill you get to 10xbb then start pushing to pick up those blinds by that time you'll have a tight enough image to get some respect on your pushes...

worst case senario you get knocked out... sounds like you get a few games in each night anyways right?

nothing really new to anyone here...

I play in a similar game to what you are describing sometimes. The game I am talking about typically has ~10 players w/ 1.5K chips each, the blinds start at 5/10 and DOUBLE EVERY 10 minutes until they are capped at 160/320; typical game is only about an hour and 15 minutes. Most guys in this game are loose passive- they love to see flops and don't raise unless they have a pair or big Ace.
I have pretty good success in this game by seeing a lot of cheap flops early w/ a wide range of hands- I play SC, one gappers, etc if I can limp or call a small raise. I only raise in the early levels w/ a legit hand because i know that any Ace/2 face cards/etc will typically call in that game and I don't want to play marginal hands against 4 or 5 players for a large pot (preflop.)
Once the blinds get larger, I tighten things up- I look big hands and make it expensive for people to see the flop. I will then C bet (unless the flop is disaster) and play 'normal poker' from there if called or raised. In that game, taking down the blinds in the final levels(160/320) represents 1/3 fo your starting chips, so it isn't a bad result if everyone else folds when you raise w/ a premium hand.
One thing I do at all levels is make sure it is expensive for other players to see the flop if I have a monster- nothing worse than allowing 5 players to see the flop cheap when I have AA-JJ or AK.
Also, I disagree w/ Eusebio- these games are profitable if you are better than the other players and you have a game plan that works for the structure you are playing- The variance is definately greater in a shorter tourney; but over time, the better players will still win the most $...

So, generally what I would probably do here is try to play a lot of hands via limping at the first level, and then if I have gotten a lot of chips, I would keep doing this strategy at the next level. The idea being, you need chips to play, so if you just tighten up and wait for a hand, you will basically be playing "I hope I get one hand and it holds up" poker and that sucks. I've played in a couple of these and my approach was to play tight and wait for the goods, figuring I'd only get to play 1-2 hands and I might as well make sure they are good. But in both cases the blinds got out of control and I was forced to move or call all in with a good hand, which did not hold up. In one of the tournaments I was chip leader at my table, with double the starting chips, for the first hour. I picked up QQ which was cracked by AT and then I picked up AT that ran into AQ and I was out. Not worth my $100 buyin for sure.

If instead you limp in the first 10 hands or so, you will be giving up 1/4 of your chips to hopefully hit some hands and double through early on. If that happens, you can keep playing pots - and your opponents won't be able to do that because they will be clamping up and waiting for a hand.
