How did I play this set.

Posted Thu May 24, 2007 6:32 pm GMT by jeffonline
I don't think I could play this any better, My flop re-raise i thought was big enough to shake of any draws. Early position raise had to be a big hand posibly AK AA KK QQ JJ TT. My turn bet was to keep him in, get some more vale and find out if he was holding JJ. I was hoping the board would pair and became edgy when the Qs hit I thought he may have chased the draw or could have had JJ or QQ so I checked after him. I was hoping fo KK AA but I was dreaming.

Can you see any room for improvement on how I played.

If you're worried about the flush draw legitimately, you need to bet significantly more on the turn, but if you were worried about it on the river, that's a good check behind.

I'm probably betting ~10-12 on the river. He almost never has a flush draw or a bigger set. You only lose to one hand basically...I don't see why you wouldn't value bet, this is a good hand to leave out the results.

I concur. I meant to put that in as well.

I like it. I might bet a little more on the turn simply for value.
I also like the check behind on the river. People in $25NL chase FD without odds all the time.
if you bet and he raises you are committed and have to call and it sucks.

Those two statements are contradictory. If you're concerned about value, that is not good reason to check behind on the river, and if you're worried about a flush draw, that's not a good turn bet.

And against virtually anything other than a flush (or the unlikely higher set as was actually the case), we are giving up a LOT by checking behind on the river.

On the turn we are ahead of everything but a higher set.
so we bet for value and for pricing out draws.

on the river there are now more hands that beat us, and a flush is a great possibility.
In fact the only hands that will call our river bets that do not beat us are A's and K's. And even those might no call seeing the flush got there.
So against a decent villain there is no value betting here at all. And against a fish who might slow played his A's and will now c/r us AI we will hard problems folding our set and will have to pay the flush....

Bet more on the turn.
