I'm finally learning to pack it in when things are going poorly, rather than keep hitting my head against the wall and losing.
What I mean is that in the past I would get in a tournament, get knocked out on a bad beat, find another tourney or SNG, suffer another bad beat, and continue on and on, always hoping to have my luck change during the evening. Last night I finally had the sense (and discipline) to understand that when things aren't going well, pack it in and play some other day. I entered a couple of tourneys last night and got busted or crippled on hands like 1) pocket K's, getting all in preflop against KQs and 77, having the KQ suck out a straight; 2) KK all in against QQ, flop comes QQx. After those hands I thought about it for a bit and figured either my luck was running bad (I don't really believe in "luck", but there are obviously times when cards run bad) or my concentration and play would suffer because of the negative vibes I was getting from the cards (this I do believe; the more "bad beats" you suffer in a session, the more you lose focus). I figured that was enough for the night and shut down the laptop.
I actually felt pretty good after packing it in - maybe there is hope for this old guy yet.
