To Tell or not to Tell

Posted Fri May 25, 2007 3:36 pm GMT by Jauron
I have a buddy I play with, I've taught him a lot overall so I understand his style and I seemed to be good at picking him off when he bluffs. I couldn't put my finger on what was giving it away though. Over the course of a the last few sessions I have put my finger on it, and the tell is VERY reliable.

So the moral question kicks in, do I tell him about this tell that nobody else seems to be picking up on or do I just go on exploiting it?

If its a friendly game, I'd probably tell him. I don't think you play friendly games to make money; you play for the fun of playing a game together. Obviously if you are playing in huge MTT on the WPT or something, you shouldn't tell your opponents information to make them better against you, but I think improving each other's games is part of what makes playing a weekly game between friends fun.

This is poker Son and not Tiddly Winks. To tell him of his tell is like comiting suicide. He pays for lessons just like anyone else. You can tell a friend his breath stinks, his wife is cheating on him or tell him his kid smokes pot. But you just can't tell him he has a poker tell. I mean would you rather he give his money to you, or some greasy haired douche bag at the local casino? Your giving poker a bad name AH... Wink

Don’t tell him unless someone else picks up on this tell. He will always think and treat you as the master.

I had a friend like this. I kept it to myself for a while. Then one day a few guys asked how I knew so I told them all of his tell. I even posted it on my blog (those were the days... ahhh) that he read.

He never caught on. Finally after taking him to the cleaners one to many times the good angel won the battle and I told him. The best part was when he asked if anyone else knew. All the regulars raised their hands.

The thing about tells is, unless the person is extremely disciplined they will keep doing the same thing. If they stop doing that particular tell it WILL be replaced by something else.

I told him about the last one, I guess this one remains with me, at least until someobody else starts picking him off.
