Since I love HU (and since I suck at cash games lately) I've decided to start an HU challenge.
I will play 100 games. And record my progress. when I lose I'll try to honestly say if its due to bad play or bad luck and will post big hands.
I'll play mostly $10+$0.75 HU shootout (4 players) and the $10+$0.50 HU.
In the shootout you need to bust 2 players but the profit is 3 times bigger.
I'll keep you updated.
Danny
ps. I'm tempted to start from today, since I just won a shootout S&G. But I'll start from now

So I played my first 2. My plan was to multi table 2 or even 3 HU at a time. Bad plan.
By the time the second table was running I had the guy in the first table down to 600 chips. But the guy in the second table was tricky and aggressive and I lost the plot in table 1 and allow villain to climb back and actually take a small lead.
I also couldn't figure villain 2 up. And kept getting short. I did manage to climb back to even from 800 twice but 3rd time I got busted.
As soon as I busted in table 2 I killed table 1 (by then he was on 1800 chips)
So multi tabling HU - not for me yet.
I decided to track down the time it takes to play each game to see what my hourly rate is...
So far :
Played 2 games.
Won 1.
total profit : $-1 (fees)
$/hour : -1$

Game 3 - weird villain called me down with Q high. sadly I was card dead. Got A once and one pocket pair which the board then came 4 to the str all overs and he bet big...
Busted out with this hand :

I think I could have been a tad more aggressive and bet bigger. But it was damn hard to get him to fold.. He called a big river bet with 2 pairs when ther where 4 to the str8 (I had the str8 that time) he called any PF raise. I got him to fold once when I had nothing...
Had my J's held, I'm pretty sure I would have managed to break him... so I'm putting this in between the two. A little bad play and a little bad luck

Wow...
Played 6 games so far and only won 2.
However I can't really blame any of these loses on bad luck or variances. Sure in 2 cases I was semi short when all the money went in and villain was behind but out drawn me (6 outs). But allowing my self to get that short is what led me to be in the position.
Last player was weird, 3 times she over bet or open pushed AI in a raised pot.
I folded AQo the first time, J's the second time (there was alone K on the flop)
Thinking about it now, the J's was probably a bad fold. But am not sure, calling all my stack in early on when there is only 200 chips in seems bad.
Guess I need to get more aggressive. Bet bigger against those Donks.
if this continue like that, I will have to drop down to a level.
So far :
Game played : 6
Profit : -$23
ROI : -0.37%
$/hour : -$10.75

playing SNG's as hu anything more than 2 is just crazy and any decent player will kick your ass that way
best to stay with 1 table anyway
Posted Sun May 27, 2007 1:38 pm GMT by Ensano
given that you can't multitable and all... not to mention the large amount of luck hu has (never more than 70/30 at BEST)
seems like hu sngs aren't very profitable...

This might be proving to be annoying :
So far played :
7 Hu games won 3
2 X 4 players shootout won 0
ROI -0.37%
$/hour : -$9.94
profit: -$35
this last shootout. First guy was real lucky - hit 3 sets on me.
But was real stupid, every time I was down he called my AI real thin (68s and the like) which allowed me to dbl up every time.
Last hand I got lucky though - I raised with 6's he called. flop was 759. All the money got in - He had 75 but the board paired but an 8 also came..
Then the above guy. Was pretty simple. Pushed many times and once I decided to look him up on the flop with bottom pair J kicker (J5) he had AK and never improved...
So I knew he was going to call the push on the hand above, just didn't know he was going to hit his 3 outer...
HU sucks
That one, was bad luck. the rest of the loses were sort of bad play.

I think that because you have to focus so much on a single heads up match, its more efficient to multitable any larger SNG (6 or 9 or 10 handed).

lol amazing thread

You can completely destroy in HU if you know it well. Swings abit, like all poker does and you can't 'safe it' so I guess that makes some people uncomfortable. A discussion of more/less luck than other forms of poker is pretty stupid, as we would be quantifying silly things. HU certainly doesn't require less skill than ring in any way.
For starters I'd say its alot about how well you read and play situations on dangerous boards (paired boards in particular) actually, but that could just be my experience fooling me.
Its def. a very cool way to play poker though, and playing when you realize you are completely outplaying your opponent is a great, just have to realize when you are outplaying and lose also (and vice versa)...don't get blinded by results, which can be easy HU.
Posted Mon May 28, 2007 11:19 am GMT by MrDarling
Yeah, I don't get it. I used to crush HU and now I don't even break even (granted, a very small sample size) But the thing is, most of the one I lost where not due to "bad luck" or opponent sucking out on me when I trap them. They just out play me.
Maybe I used to crush the $5 and never played the $10 much and am simply not good enough to crush the $10. Maybe I'm in a losing state of mind.
Am not sure.
We're moving today, and I do not know when I'm going to have internet again, so I'm putting this "challenge" on hold for now. Will still attempt to complete 100 games.
Posted Mon May 28, 2007 12:00 pm GMT by tame_deuces
Well, I think you need quite abit more matches than you have here to make anything of the results. 10 games aren't much.
Posted Mon May 28, 2007 12:09 pm GMT by MrDarling
Again, I agree, the sample size is real small.
however, if I'm being outplayed, then 10 games is enough to see I have a huge hole in my HU game.
So far, when ever I lost in HU it was almost due to one big hand where either I get suckout on, or its a cooler. However in the above 10 games, only once did I feel I was being unlucky. All the rest, villain simply kept pushing me around and getting me short. If I get real short it means I've been outplayed.
Really, only in one of the game I felt villain was real lucky. He hit every deck (that went to SD) had 3 sets during the game (he kept showing them to me) however I actually won that game since he sucked. I went real short a couple of times and pushed with Ax or KQ and he kept calling with small SC. Without odds. His calls dbl me up back to even and the blinds were not high enough.
So in this case, he allowed me to gain back chips and gave me the opportunity to get lucky on him on one big hand and bust him.
In my other games, I allowed opponents to gain a big chips and put them in a position that it was ok for them get lucky on me in one big hand.
In other words, sure its a small sample size - but I've been out played in most of these games.

nah change your thinking, it's real easy to get coolered in HU, getting 2nd pair will usually lose you a bunch of chips, so don't feel outplayed, cause then you'll put yourself on tilt. If you wanna learn how to play HU, just keep on playing and look at how you are getting beat and apply it to your game.
You need to play more, and think about results less.
