Worst call ever

Posted Mon May 28, 2007 11:34 pm GMT by Jefecaminador
Its bubble time in a satelite event where everyone gets paid the same ammount. Binds are 500/1000 and I'm the big stack on the table with about 15k, smallest at the table has like 3k. 2nd highest on my table has 6k.

The top 62 get paid the same and there are currently 3 people with less than 1bb remaining. As long as everyone on my table folds, they should be able to make it past the bubble.

I'm UTG with A3 and push all in. My rational for doing this, is that I'm at no risk whatsoever, even if I get called and lose the hand, I'm still at 10k and can easily just wait 2-3 more hands til the bubble burts. All I really wanted was to see if someone was dumb enough to call me.

Guess what, someone was. Guy in the sb thinks about it for 15 seconds, asks if I have aces. I tell him hell no I don't, I just wanna see if someone is dumb enough to call me. He ends up calling with KK, he had like 6k in chips so he too was in no danger of not mkaing the money. The flop gives me nothing, but I hit running 3s to knock him out. Unfortunaley one of the small stacks busted the same hand so he ended up making the money. But I had a good laugh. Seriously, how do you call in that situation? I wouldn't even do it with pocket aces.

He had the next biggest stack at his table covered better than 2-1. No real risk to him; he could lose the hand and still make the "money" simply by sitting out until the bubble is burst. I like his play - check out who really are the idiots at the table (I'd fold KK in buddy's position, given the payout structure, rather than risk getting sucked out and knocked out on the bubble).

Thats my point.

I'm indifferent if ppl call my bet or not, I still make the money either way. All I really wanted to see was if someone would risk going all the way with me. When the big stack on the table pushes in this situation, with 1 left to go and everyone getting paid equal, unless you're very close to being blinded off, the correct play is to fold any hand, even aces.

The guy with kings made the wrong play, and was very lucky that a shorter stack busted the same hand as he did.

all i'm saying is that online people are so stupid or dont care or whatever that making your move is bad when u have such a good lead
unless u want to be the one who busts the last guy
and do u really think that anyone but the best players online will fold AA there ?

Well, it was clearly a place where the opponent didn't understand this kind of tournament strategy.

They said, "Wow, I can win this hand/double up" rather than asking what that would do for them.

Maybe they didn't realize they were playing in a structure that everyone who qualifies gets exactly the same prize? I can't believe he thought he actually needed more chips to survive to the money.

Or maybe it was late/too many beers where he was.

You don't have to be a good player to fold AA in this situation. You just have to know what the hell is going on. I wasn't trying to force people to fold, all I wanted to do was to see if someone was dumb enough to call.

The move wasn't bad or good. Making it or not making it had absolutely no bearing on whether or not I got paid.

On a side note, I played the same tourny last night and cashed again. It seems like a really soft event, an easy way to get 4x your buy in, and it only takes a little more than an hour to play. You guys should check it out. Token Madness on FT.

Somewhat interestingly, is I bet that some reasonably "good players" will make similar mistakes here too.
