OFFICIAL WSOP 2007 THREAD |

I'll sticky a thread to try and keep things in one easy place from now on regarding general WSOP event chat.
I was just looking through the list of events currently on the go and Event #10 which is the $2,000 buy-in NLHE event has a semi-famous name (if you are an Englishman) currently 3rd in chips.
The guy is called Michael Greco and he used to be an actor in the biggest show on TV over here. He has become quite the poker player of late and is sitting 3rd of 125 players. I'm going to go out on a limb and call him to final table it at least.

I saw about 20 seconds of his commentary once on tv. I hope old beppe has improved a bit since then because he didn't have a clue.

"Zee"Justin Bonomo is the massive chip leader going into the final table of the $2k NL tournament today, Phil Ivey is second in chips on the final table of the $5k Stud event, and J.C. Tran is the chip leader going to Day 2 of the short-handed event. There is some real star power out today including some popular THP picks.

It's impossible not to love Phil Hellmuth at a time like this:
"Hellmuth Loses His Chips and His Cool
With 90 players remaining in event 10, all of whom are in the money, players are anything less than patient, and tempers are everything but subdued. Phil Hellmuth was eliminated in 104th place, and his exit was all but graceful.
On a flop of 432, Phil Hellmuth gets put to a decision for all of his chips when Great “Spiderman” Partho moves all-in. Sami Rustom, also at Hellmuth’s table, decides to call “clock” on Phil after only a couple of minutes. This is about the point where Hellmuth begins to have a minor meltdown and starts by calling the floor over. Hellmuth tells Rustom, “I’ve been playing everyday straight for four or five days now and I have a decision for all of my chips.” Rustom explains that he feels that Phil is abusing the clock by taking a few minutes to make the call. Phil replies, “By calling the clock on me, you’re abusing the clock, and if you do it again, you’ll get a twenty minute penalty!” So the floor man gets involved and tells Rustom that Hellmuth still has three or four minutes to act before the clock will go in effect. Hellmuth dives back into the tank and ultimately makes the call. Hellmuth shows 99 and Spiderman flips over AJ for the bluff. Hellmuth loves his position until the 5 hits giving Spiderman the wheel, and this is where Hellmuth totally loses it. He screams and dives head-first out of his seat and onto the floor. He pounds the floor with his fists during his temper tantrum, and then stands up only to start taking digs at Spiderman. Phil proceeds to have a conversation with himself out loud and the phrases “mother f-----“ and “idiot” seem to make several appearances. After Hellmuth tells Spiderman, “You played that hand like an idiot!”, Spiderman now loses his cool replying, “You’re the idiot, you bet all of your money on nines, and now you’re broke!” Well Phil may be busted, but he certainly isn’t broke and his 104th place finish today has earned him $3,901."

Greco busted 30th in Event #10 which is still a great result in a field of 1531. I'm tipping him to final table something this year - he definitely has the skills. I truly hate the show he was on in the UK so I badly want him to redeem himself for starring on it!

I am on fire with this post padding today.
Event #12 and the form player of 2007, JC Tran is leading the way with 61 players left. I bet he takes it down.
I'm calling Ivey for the Stud event too to make it two stud bracelets in 5 years.

You copycat post-padder.
You can't ever bet against JC this year.

ZeeJustin busto in 4th place.
Phil Ivey still alive with 4 left, all are relatively close in chips.
J.C. Tran still in very good position in the short-handed event, which is winding down.
Sorel "Imper1um" Mizzi is building a nice stack in the $5k Pot-Limit event, looking to redeem himself.

Ivey takes 2nd in the Stud event. Along with his 2nd to Sam Farha last year in the Omaha-8 event, he has missed bracelets 6 and 7 by the narrowest of margins.

JC is out. Live Poker is rigged.

Great work by Reslock in the stud event - reading his history on the Cardplayer report shows that it was no fluke. Granted he had a very big chip lead going into HU with Ivey but it's still a great result.

Allen Cunningham wins his fifth bracelet!
Today, Phil Hellmuth goes for number 11!
What a great Series.

It looks like it's Hellmuth's to lose now. Big chip lead, only 3 remain.

Negreanu (as well as Lindgren) and Raymer at final tables today. Chance for Raymer's second bracelet, E-Dog's first, and Negreanu's fourth.

I see Raymer has cashed already this year. I'm a big fan of his.

At a stud event no less. He has a good shot of taking this one down.

Negreanu missed a bracelet by a whisker against some bad, bad players in the shootout
Posted Thu Jun 14, 2007 2:30 am GMT by xDiamond_CutteRx
Yeah it was funny, even Cardplayer reporters were saying Daniel was owning them so bad that the only way he could lose is if he got coolered. Then, lo and behold...
Bad day for Raymer and Negreanu, because it looked like they both had it locked up. John "The Razor" Phan came even closer, but fell short in second in the $2500 Hold'em event.

Didn't I tell you Hellmuth would be one to watch? The dude is also leading in most cashes at the WSOP. Like him or hate him you have to give Crybaby some respect.

Well, it's about 7:30 pm, and he hasn't replied to the text message. Either he's still in the tournament, or Greg Raymer mistakened him for a cookie.

I'm still in it.
At about 27K in chips. Started with 4K. Somewhere between 400 and 450 players left out of 1600+.
Dinner break is right now, it was early because of some chip stealing incident where they had to consult video cameras or something like that?
Anyway, the poker pavilion isn't air-conditioned very well and I feel like I've been slow-baking since noon. I gotta dook and get back there. Wish me luck.

In the money and it's over for the day. 134 players left, bubble was at 153. Next increase is at 127.
I'm at a below-average 29,500 in chips, I think the average is around 50K
Oh well, it's nice to place in the money in my first tourny. Hopefully I can double up early tomorrow.

I hung out for those bubble moments... it kinda sucks in tourneys of this size, because every dealer on 30 different tables deal out one hand then stop. All the attention is always drawn to some table where someone is all in.
Yeah, it was kind of exciting again to go to the WSOP... all the pros are out there as always, and you pass them all the time.
Yeah, I'm rooting for Adam today. We haven't done any major partying as of yet, so he's definitely rested.
Posted Sat Jun 16, 2007 8:01 pm GMT by Adam Marshall
I'm out. 81st place.
The crappy thing is that my lucky ass tripled up early. A similiarly short-stacked player raised UTG, I was on the button with tens, and I went all-in for around $4K more, the sb folds and the bb instantly calls. UTG player had Q8s and the bb had kings. I swore and stood up and the flop came T44.
I sat down and the turn/river didn't bring a king. I was at 70K+.
I gave those back to the bb a round later when I opened the pot with AQo from the button in an uncontested pot preflop. Small folded and the big went all-in for just over 10K more. I thought it was just a knee-jerk to what looked like a blind steal and I insta-called. I should've thought more about it, but in retrospect I was in there no matter what. Dude had AKs and I didn't improve.
Then I lost a pot fighting with the small blind on the next round (I always stir it up when I'm the button I guess?) when I opened with K9s. Small went all-in and bb folded, and I was getting better than 2.5 to 1 so I called. He had AJ and I didn't improve. Back down to 20-some thousand.
The killer was when the blinds were at 1500/3000 with a 400 ante and I got A9s in middle position. That's an all-in right? My M was less than 3, so I pushed and the sb went over top with jacks. No luck and I'm out.
Even worse though is the whole process of getting your damn money. You have to wait at the table for someone to come get you and escort you to a table where someone puts your name on a list. It took them a while to come get me, which actually might've made me $1000, since there was a pay jump at 81st. Anyway, I got to a table and some dude has another guy escort me to the "payout" room. I wait in line. They process my player's card/license/whatever pile of paperwork they've already created and tell me to wait in the "payout lounge". I go in there where five other dudes are ahead of me. Also, no beer. Just soda and water. Sid would call that "non-intuitive".
I wait in there for 15 minutes and finally get directed to some hot girl who asks me all my info (including my SSN, which I hate, but I guess it's for tax reasons).
"Would you like to take out a gratuity for the dealers?"
"Don't you already take out a substantial amount for the dealers?"
"Well, it's actually for the whole staff."
"No."
Then she puts my info in a pile for a f*cking verifier to double-check. Wait 15 more minutes.
He checks it and has someone else escort me to the payout cage to wait in ANOTHER line to wait for my payout.
10 more minutes and I think Mimi Tran cut in line in front of me.
Then it takes the lady 10 minutes to process this bible-sized pile of garbage they've created for my measily 81st place payout. This processing includes triple checking parts of my information.
Since I wanted front money (since I already have money stashed away with the casino), it took an extra dude to come up and say "That'll just be one more second while we file your payout."
That's why there are bars on the payout cage apparently, because I had already been waiting a damn hour and I needed to piss and smoke and otherwise I would've simply crushed his head Jax-Fatality-style and let the Rio keep my money as a reparation for slaying an employee.
Sorry for the long post. I have some pent up energy.
And Geno, I did reply to your email last night, did you not get it? If not, it basically said "Come to Vegas".
So I'm going to either get drunk now or go to the gym. We'll see after this cigarette.
Stay in school kids.

Wow, Adam, I didn't know you just busted out. Bummer. I have the day off on Monday, so after my roommate's party, we'll hang out. DiamondCutter will be out and it'll be cool.
So, the tip I have out here I found out was the tourneys at the Venetian are getting some pretty good response. For the $330 buy-in you can play these $84 satellites that pay two places. Also, this is a deep stack tourney with 40 minute blinds. The guy who told me (an employee of the gambler's book store) said the day he played had a 1st place payout of 50K!!! That's huge. He said there were 200 playas with 100 alternates. For all you guys coming out this is great value.
This means you, Geno. Apparently, you're coming out... hurrah!

Sal,
I've been thinking about playing the Wynn tourney at noon this Thursday but it sounds like the Venetian's might be better. Any thoughts on how they compare? I see sign up for the V starts 2 hours prior - how fast do they usually fill up? How long does the V tourney usually last? Finally, when do they run the satellites?

So Hoyt Corkins is chip leader in Event #30. I really can't decide if he is good or a bit of a donk. I guess good but we'll see if he can close it out later today...........

Negreanu is on the FT of event 32 (7CS). Hellmuth is top 20 of 150 or so in the FLHE event. Could be bracelet #12.

Well, it's probably too late to give you this info... sorry Gogie. It's been a long work week. Either way, they have an alternate list... I heard that in one of the tourneys they had 200 playing plus 100 alternates! The Venetian tourney lasted 12 hours on average. The satellites are run all the time... they removed the adjacent casino tables games and put in some separate poker tables strictly for the satellites.
As far as a comparison, I think the Venetian tourneys have been a huge success. I'd go there if I were you, considering it's a deep stack tournament. $50k for first place! It's also heavily advertised and talked about, so I think everyone's going there.

Well, I'm a little restless right now, considering I left Adam's room at 7am PT, and I'm still awake at 1:45pm. I just got done watching "Rounders" on DVD, as I'm kind of a little inspired right now.
Last night, I met Adam at around midnight. I had played a single table satellite ($130 buy-in on a $330 tournament, two places get a seat), and busted fifth. Seemed like Adam was done playing for the night, so we planned on doing a little bar hopping. First stop, the Dragon Bar at the Rio. Have two heinekens (i'm a light weight, so by then I was definitely a bit toasty, and it's my weekend.) I told Adam not to let me get drunk and play table games for $15 stakes... I had dropped two hundred with him a week ago. So, it was dying down a bit, and I had to find something original to do. He'd never gone to the Hooters casino, so we went.
We walked around the table games... tried to find a seat in the hooters pit... or as Adam likes to call these games... the tit pit. I want to play them as I am a little toasty by now, and I walk him to the Pete's Poker Room. We ask what games are playing and we walk around some more. At one point one girl stops me and asks if she can squeeze my azz then spank it. I said sure. She squeezed. She spanked. I spanked her. Adam said "Let's play some poker."
Now, I don't normally like to play poker while I've been drinking, but hey it's 1/2NL. Okay. We're seated at different tables. I drink red bulls and really nasty coffee to sober up a bit. It did the trick. Later in the night my table broke up and I went to Adam's table, and watched him take some horrible beats. It's been a bad run on the live cash games for him. It always hurts to lose, but thank god it was only 1/2NL. But before I was moved to his table, check out this hand.
I'm sitting in the small blind. Two folds and third from teh button raises to $12. This guy played a decent game. He beat me in a hand with top pair jacks ace kicker in one hand, so along with a few other hands, I had a bit of feel for his play. The button raises to $24. He seemed like a solid player. Plays good cards. No real bluffing going on from him, so really ABC. I glance at my hand. Pocket queens. Pause for dramatic affect. I reraise here to $50. I had about a $225 stack and it drop to about $175. Original raiser pauses for not even one second then moves all-in for about another $200 more. The button folds. I stop to think about what was going on here. One guy raises. Button re-raises. I re-raise. A solid player moves all-in. When you look at queens, they are really pretty. Especially out of the blind. I announced I had never done it before in this game, but given his re-raise all-in... most likely to stop an ace with kicker from calling... I had to consider kings. Aces would do this too... no need for three players with aces, right? He kind of blurts out something about getting your money in with the best hand. I'm not really big on the comment. I look at my stack, and consider... well if I'm on the heavier side of a coin flip... I'm calling $200 for a $90 pot. But, this guy didn't seem like the type who would do that with AK. Most people just call with AK in that spot. So, I turned over my queens and showed. I told him I never folded that kind of hand in that game pre-flop before, but he can only have aces or kings. The button player stands up to look at my hand. Two guys next to them stand and stare as well. I turn my cards over and push them to the dealer. The dealer mucks my cards and begins to push the pot to the all-in bettor. He shows his aces.
I'm still a little in disbelief over my read in that spot.

A poker buddy of mine is playing in the "seniors" event at the WSOP today. He called me about 2 hours ago on the dinner break and said there were about 1800 players in the event and with 300 left, he was the chip leader. Wow. Told him to make the final table.
He played one other event this year & played for 13 hours but finished 8 spots out of the money. He plays a tight, solid game.

Good luck to your buddy!
The HORSE Championship is still star-studded as ever. Daniel Negreanu, John Juanda, and Allen Cunningham have big stacks, Phil Ivey and Chip Reese are still in, Barry Greenstein is still alive, and even Phil Hellmuth is still kicking. If all 4 members of the "old crew" made the final table, that would be pretty sick. And if Allen won... wow, that might end any argument that he's the best tournament player in the world right now.

Playing Big Pots
The players left in the field are NOT afraid to get their chips in the middle. Bob Stotka raised to 15K in middle position with and, from the small blind, Rod Clarida moved all-in for about 100K more with pocket Nines. Stotka called and the race was on. Clarida made a set on the flop, which also gave Stotka a flush draw, but Bob didn't catch a diamond the rest of the way and doubled Clarida up to 250K. Stotka is down to 165,000.

The Ladies, They Are Fickle
Minutes ago David Icke won a big pot with pocket Queens, but just a few hands later he found himself racing against that same hand. Under the gun he raised to 12,000 with A K and Jack "The Staten Island Snake" Deutsch came over the top for his last 71,500. Icke called, Deutsch showed his Queens, and the race was on. The Q J 4 flop gave Deutsch a set but left open a gutshot draw for Icke. And incredibly, the 10 turned to make Icke's straight. That's when we noticed some commotion coming from that table, as the "The Snake" jumped out of his chair and he and his supporters on the rail called out for the board to pair on the river. And on the river, the 10 . "WELCOME TO THE (EXPLETIVE DELETED) SNAKE PIT!!" Deutsch shouted as the chips were pushed his way. The modified F-bomb rule is apparently to The Snake's liking. He now has 165,000 chips, while Icke is down to 185K.

They are doing a decent job.
Rod just pushed on the button with A2 suited. It was down to 7 and he was the short stack. Small blind called with AA. Bummer!
Flop came a 4, 5, 10. Turn came the Ace to give the guy a set.
River a 3!!!!!
Double up baby. LOL

He is making a believer out of me!!!
He has been near the short stack all day & just caught this break :
A Family Pot Pays Off For Rod Clarida
With all six players limping into the pot the betting was checked to Tony Korfman after the 2 2 3 flop and he bet 80,000. Ernest Bennett called and Rod Clarida, who checked from the big blind, moved in for 145,000 more. Korfman folded and Bennett thought it over before mucking. Clarida turned over the 'ol 7-2 for the flopped trips and raked in a pot that pushed his stack up to 550K.

Your boy is running good at the perfect time, I hope he can keep it going.
"Aces Again
While under the gun Tony Korfman raised to 60K and Thomas Catanzaro and Ernest Bennett called. From the big blind Rod Clarida moved in for 470K more, which induced Korfman and Catanzaro to fold. Bennett arranged the chips he needed to call and positioned them beside his cards. He thought it over, but decided to toss his cards in the middle instead of pushing in his chips. Clarida slapped his pocket Aces on the table and said that he wanted a call. Bennett said he folded pocket Sixes and, who knows, "There could've been a six on the flop!". Clarida will have to be content with his 700,000 stack."

Down to 5 :
Leon Lewis Is Eliminated in 6th Place
Ernest Bennett raised to 100K under the gun and Leon Lewis moved all-in for 170,000 more from the small blind. Bennett called and showed A 6 , while Lewis held K J .
The A 6 Q flop gave Bennett a pair (looks like 2 pair to me) and Lewis a gutshot draw, but the 3 and 5 fell on the turn and river and that was enough to end Lewis's day. He wins $47,953 for his sixth-place finish. And Bennett increased his chip lead to 1,350,000.
Posted Wed Jun 27, 2007 7:13 pm GMT by 1988 TR
Well, he didn't over bet, but that didn't work either!
We Know He Plays This Hand
In the small blind Bennett raised to 200,000, and Clarida re-raised an additional 200K. Bennett folded...and once again Clarida flipped over Aces. He now has 1,005,000 compared to Bennett's 1,100,000.
Nice!!! Almost the chip leader. Crazy!!! I can hardly belief this. Totally happy for him.

Down to 3!!!
Ed Smith Is Eliminated in 4th Place
In the small blind Ed Smith moved all-in for 420,000 and Ernest Bennett quickly called with AK. Smith held Q10 and the 9Q3 flop gave Smith a straight draw and Bennett a flush draw. The A on the turn paired Bennett and the 4 on the river made his flush, which was good enough to eliminate Smith in 4th place. He takes home 95,907 for his efforts the last three days.
Posted Wed Jun 27, 2007 8:49 pm GMT by 1988 TR
Rod was in third & the 2 chip leaders got all in. Rod was set to move to second place when the board straighted on the river & saved a guy from elimination. Rod had to make a move & got all in with QJ and was dominated by KJ.
3rd place
Hell of an effort. Good job!!!

pokernews is the best site for updates, imho. In fact, when the Series began, they caught Bluff stealing chip counts from them by purposely reporting the counts of fake players and seeing those players and their chip counts reported on Bluff's site soon after.

Big props to Freddy Deeb for winning the new Big One, the 50k HORSE. I've frequently thought that that guy is one of the very best players NOT to win a bracelet since the Poker boom began, even though he's had a host of impressive finishes (not to mention the win in Aruba). Other than Barry Greenstein, I don't think the bracelet could have gone to a more deserving player at that final table. Also huge props to David Singer for making that final table two years in a row! Very impressive! He's also a great player who frequently gets overlooked, but no one should doubt that guy's talent. All in all a very cool event.
I was really hoping Marcel Luske would win today, too, but he's still had an impressive performance these last few years. Now that Jeff Lisandro has his bracelet, I might have to say Marcel is the best player not to win a bracelet.
Posted Sat Jun 30, 2007 11:32 am GMT by Geno
I have only seen Deeb in HSP and wouldn't say I rate him that highly but that was a great result for him.
Dutch Boyd and Scotty Nguyen are both at the FT in the 6-handed and Omaha events so we could have a couple more high profile bracelet winners today.

Some of the reporting on the CardPlayer website has been a bit dodgy at times. Example:
"First Friberg called Bolotin's preflop $125,000 raise to see a flop of A Q 7. Bolotin made a continuation bet of $200,000 and called Friberg when he moved all in over the top. Friberg was ahead with Q J to Bolotin's K 10. The turn and river came 7 and J, and Friberg doubled up."
So AQQJJ beats AKQJT now huh?

Chris Ferguson and Phil Hellmuth have eached cashed as many as 8 times in a year in past years, so 5 isn't even close. Not sure if anyone has got 9. I think Phil already has like 5 or 6 this year.

I'm pretty sure they've never used $5 chips in the main...I believe it starts at 25/25.
Posted Fri Jul 06, 2007 4:28 pm GMT by xDiamond_CutteRx
According to my research, Johnny Moss has 8 bracelets, not 9, although Cardplayer has repeatedly written that he has 9 since Erik Seidel won his 8th yesterday. They also stated mistakenly several times in the $50K HORSE event that David Singer got 3rd in that tournament last year; Phil Ivey took 3rd last year, not David Singer, although Singer was the only player to make a repeat final table appearance from last year.
Historically, the Main Event has started with 10K in chips and starting blinds of 25/50. This year is has changed to 20K, starting with 50/100 blinds, exactly doubled, but there has been some alteration to the later structure as well, causing some controversey, as some pros claim the structure is better (although only marginally so), while others claim it is worse.

"Teddy Sheringham Here
Teddy Sheringham is a world-famous football (or soccer) player who just signed with Colchester United on July 4. He's 44 but still going strong in the game. Apparently, if you're a sports star, the thing to do after signing a new deal is play in the World Series of Poker."

Interesting tidbit I read, they actually had to make a rule for this:

Wow, what a read
Simon 'Aces' Trumper Survives Quad Jacks
With the board showing on the turn, a player bets 5,000, and Simon 'Aces' Trumper calls. The river card is the , and the first player bets 7,000. Trumper thinks for a bit, saying, "There's only one hand that beats me here." He thinks a little longer, and simply calls, leaving himself 2,000 in chips as he shows for top full house on the river.
Most people would have put their last 2,000 in the pot there, but Trumper's read was correct, as his opponent shows for quad jacks.
Trumper is down to 2,000, but most players in his situation would already be headed for the exit.
Posted Sat Jul 07, 2007 6:04 pm GMT by Ensano
to me that's just scared play pretending to use skill as a reason to just call..
Posted Sat Jul 07, 2007 6:35 pm GMT by xDiamond_CutteRx
Simon Trumper is a pretty respectable pro, so I don't think it's scared play.
Think about it this way. Depending on his exact stack size, the extra 2000 chips he would get from pushing and calling are worth a LOT less than the 2000 he would save if he was beat, and thus forfeit his shot at the biggest cash tournament of the year.
Posted Sat Jul 07, 2007 6:43 pm GMT by Ensano
point taken...
assuming the 5k bet was a decent bet and the pot before hand was 10k by time he called the final bet the pot was 34k... not much difference between 34k and 38k whereas if he is beat he's out...
although the size of the blinds are a factor... if the blinds are 1k/2k there's not point in keeping the 2k behind... but with JJvsKK i'm assuming there was a raise preflop and action on the flop, so i doubt the blinds are that big right now..

David Singer Elimination Controversey
Video Interview
| Quote: | On a flop of and facing a bet of 3,000 from a late-position player David Singer moved all from the button for 9,450.
Here's where the hand gets interesting. As David's opponent was contemplating his decision his cell phone rang -- he removed it from his pocket, glanced at it and turned it off. Singer said nothing at first but made a motion to the dealer.
Then his opponent said "I'll just pay you off, I'll call."
At this point Singer said, "His hand should be dead," and requested a ruling from the floorperson. When the floorperson heard the situation she called for the Tournament Director to make a ruling.
After a re-enactment of exactly how the player touched his phone, the Tournament Director ruled that his hand was not dead and he would be allowed to play.
Singer then requested a higher ruling, saying, "I have a drawing hand here and I obviously don't want him to be allowed to call."
This request was denied and the players' hands were tabled, with Singer showing for bottom pair and a flush draw and his opponent holding for top pair.
The turn and river did not help Singer and he has been eliminated.
As he left the table he was asking for a refund, saying, "Ever since I have been here, I have been told that if you touch your phone during a hand then your hand is dead."
At this point we don't know if that request will be considered but we do know that David Singer will not be playing Day Two of the Main Event, and he's not happy about it. |
...
| Quote: | David Singer is still meandering around the Amazon Room, trying to resolve the cellphone controversy surrounding his elimination from the tournament.
Here's the latest:
Jack Effel wants to investigate whether or not the player in question was using his phone for text messaging purposes; Singer believes that fact is irrelevant.
Here is the official cellphone policy, as stated in the 2007 WSOP rulebook:
"82. Cell Phone Rule: A player who wants to use a cellular phone must step away from the table. Any player on the cell phone or texting a messaging when the dealer delivers the first card from the deck will have a dead hand. No cell phones can be placed on a poker table."
Singer, who is a lawyer by profession, has requested a refund from tournament staff and is seeking the opportunity to play in one of the remaining Day Ones. We're also told that he intends to speak with the gaming commission about the situation.
PokerNews has conducted a video interview with Singer regarding the controversy and it will be available for viewing momentarily. Stay tuned. |
Nothing good can come of this ruling. While it is cheap and exploitative of the rules, Singer was absolutely within his rights to ask to have the hand killed (it wasn't as though the guy had called, Singer had seen the hand, and THEN asked to kill it), and the floor person made a terrible ruling.
The dilemma as I see it is if Singer is allowed to play on another day, this will prompt a massive wave of complaints from people busted under questionable circumstances. Only real solution I see is to refund his buy-in, but not allow him to play on another Day 1. That's just a can of worms I don't think anyone wants opened.

well thats pretty stupid...
if that is really the ruling saying "if you touch your phone your hand is dead" singer should be right here
pretty sure he wouldnt be whinging about it and asking if the chips be returned to his opponent if the river was a spade though

I have to disagree with you here man. The ruling clearly states "on the cell phone or texting a messaging" so ignoring the horrible typo(!), you have to be either texting or making/receiving a call neither of which his opponent was doing. If Singer had spiked his flush and won the hand, would he still be arguing the point? I think it's just sour grapes personally.
It was also proven by the Rio staff that to answer a call being made to the cell phone that the player was using requires three button presses. The player pressed one button to mute the ringing sound and thus never received the call and was not contravening the rules.

sounds like a lawyer angle shooting to get back into the tournament... that's all... he's being a little bitch about losing...
i understand how big the stakes are but still... i have the same thing on my phone... while it's ringing there's a button on the side you press to much the ringer... if buddy never openend his phone then there really isn't an issue...
this kinda reminds me of a court case where a drycleaner lost a pair of some laywer's pants and now the lawyer is suing the guy for like 6 million dollars or something ridiculous like that just cause he knows how the system works... also he's trying to get a civil action suit and include anyone who has lost anything at that drycleaners in the past 10 years... just so he could sue for more...

Wtf is with Vinnie Vinh? How often is he going to pull this disappearing act? For those who don't know, on at least two occasions, he made it to Day 2 of a tournament, didn't show up, and was blinded out. He still isn't back from dinner at the ME.
Anyone seen the pictures of him? He looks skinny as hell, and if you know Vinnie, that is not normal, as he usually has a nice round face. These days he's looking like, hate to say it... Stu Ungar.

It's pretty obvious to me and everyone else with eyes that he is suffering from some sort of substance abuse problem, not sure what exactly, but his behavior/appearance is pretty consistent with a meth or heroin addict. If so, very sad.

And so on. I believe minimum payout is $15,000 this year.
Personally I'm not a fan of it, although I do like the somewhat flatter structure. IMO, 2005 had the most fair payout structure near the top, with 1st making only 7.5x 9th. This year it's over 15x. I think it's a little weird that you have to make like 80th just to make 10x the buy-in, but most people are in for like way less than $10K.
Personally I think if any tournament should have a flatter structure that pays more places, it should be the WSOP ME because of the huge numbers and the publicity it receives. More satisfied customers might make better business for Harrah's.

Vinny Vinh was in hospital on Friday so it is feasible that he is just f*cked up from that? Of course he might have been there because of his crystal meth addiction...........

hey I noticed 6358 people entered the ME this year. That is down from last year isn't it? Wasn't last year something like 8,000?
The damn government and it's online ban bill is probably the greatest reason for this decline. With any luck though poker will survive the governments stupidity and continue to thrive. I like to see more and more fish at the tables personally.

personally i still don't understand why tournaments are so top heavy... just look at the sun M on stars this sunday...
6800 people 13th paid 5700 and first paid 192800!!!
that's a big jump for such huge places...
even the differencen of 1st and 2nh 100k...
i don't get it 13th of 6800 is still a significant place but then you look at the overall money paid out the payout isn't significant at all...
also winning HU you get more than double your money?!
why such a big jump... why not just a 50% increase?... that would still leave another 50k to spread around to the other players.....

This is a blog by Dr Pauly- he follows the WSOP, WPT, PPT, etc and does chip counts, etc for whoever hires him to freelance. He is doing the WSOP for pokernews (live chipcounts, etc) but does a daily summary on his blog. Sorry mods, there are links to poker sites.
He has some good insight on the Vinnie sit in todays artical, and talks about it several times in past posts (The ghost of Stu Unger is an awesome read)
Another great read is the post about Eric Lindgren's prop bet- he had to walk 3 rounds of golf in Vegas (100*+ heat) and shoot less than 100 in each, all in the same day. Bet was around 1/4 million...

9-Hand Penalty For Truth Telling
"Do you have the king?" Tommy Giampaolo was asked. "Yeah, I have the king," Tommy G replied. A king had landed on the turn and Tommy's opponent mucked after asking. Much to the surprise of Tommy G, the floor was called over for a ruling. Tommy G was informed that he's not allowed to actually disclose to anyone at the table what his actual hand is. For doing so, he was given a 9-hand penalty. "Had you told a lie about the hand, that would have been okay," the floor staff informed him. Tommy G got up from the table and pulled out his cell phone to make a call, then quickly stopped. "I'm going to go use my phone, is that okay? Or are you going to give me a penalty for that too?" Tommy G remarked on his way out of the tournament area.

The final nine players to bubble the WSOP Main Event this year (finishers 622-630) will participate in a single table sit-n-go, where the winner will receive a $10,000 seat into the 2008 WSOP Main Event, along with a year's supply of beer from the official sponsor, Milwaukee's Best.
Jack Effel just reminded the players of this fact, hoping it will spur a little more action from the short stacks on the bubble. |

So 36 players remain and Scotty is still in there. Daniel Alaei is in the hunt also so hopefully one of them will make the FT.
On a side note, it was a disappoint WSOP for Josh Arieh who expected good things from. Only one cash in the entire tourney
Posted Sun Jul 15, 2007 12:56 pm GMT by xDiamond_CutteRx
Would be so sick if Scotty won. Top pros Bill Edler, Daniel Alaei, and Lee Watkinson also still alive. I am really hoping a pro wins this year. Would be much better for Poker if someone with a little class won after last year's debacle. Scotty would be the best of all worlds: entertaining, a pro, and a class act all the way. Plus he could be just the 5th repeat Main Event champ ever.
Btw, for those who don't know, Scotty has already has a monster WSOP:
$10,000 Pot Limit Omaha - 15th place
$1,000 Seven Card Stud 8 - 4th place
$5,000 Heads Up No Limit Hold'em - 17th place
$3,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low - 2nd place
$2,500 Omaha/Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo 8 - 10th place

On a side note, the final table of the Bellagio Cup ME is absolutely stacked!!!
Kevin "BeL0WaB0Ve" Saul ($4,200,000)
Mike Matusow ($1,800,000)
Shane "shaniac" Schleger ($1,800,000)
Danny Wong ($1,000,000)
Konstantin Puchkoy ($1,000,000)
Eracles Panayiyou ($600,000)
Nam Le also went out in 8th.

11 players remain including Scotty who is very healthy on 15.5m chips (hard to say what the leader is on but I think it's about 17.5m). I'm desperate for him to make the FT at least but I just a feeling that he is going to go all the way this year.

Yeah they did that so ESPN would be able to setup it's Pay Per View of the final table.
(Steps up on his soap box, clears his throat)
You know I think the whole problem with the WSOP and poker in general now is the big corporations getting involved. My father in law says (and I know for a fact) that the mafia used to control lots of the casino and home game action. We all know for th most part that history will show us the mafia did have a big part in lots of the casinos.
Now days we have a new mafia who is worse then any other mafia in the country. This new mafia stands tall and proud with government protection. They not only bought off local law enforcement they bought off the entire US government. The new mafia that is killing the WSOP is corporations.
They want to put it on TV and charge you. Why? Don't they make enough money from the rake? Don't they make enough money renting out rooms, selling meals and getting people in the door to see poker champions and not so champions battling it out for a title, a good chunk of cash and a wonderful bracelet?
Cover it live and put it on TV for free. Then your going to catch some new interest. You'll catch the rookie fish who happens to flip channels and sees it. You'll catch new blood and draw them into the game. Why sell what could be the greatest marketing tool for Harrah's that ever was?
(Steps down...thank you for reading this rant if you have...and before you comment...it doesn't have to mean shit...its just a rant)

Because people will pay for it. Once people stop ponying up their $20 or $30 or $40, they'll stop hawking it. Besides, the only people interested in watching the final table live are degenerates like us; although I'd rather have toothpicks jammed under my fingernails than watch live poker for 12-18 hours, let alone pay for the privilege.

Is it just me, or does the description make it seem like the final table players are playing extremely poorly? This is reading like a $1/$2 donkfest. There was absolutely no reason for Hilm to go out ninth when he had the chip lead, or for Yang to risk so many chips with TPTK.

I already do not like the chip leader, despite his charitable plans for his winning.
Few things piss me off more than people thanking "God" for competetive or sporting success, as though God would give a flying f*ck about YOU winning a hand of Poker or the Super Bowl more than someone else. Very self-aggrandizing if you ask me.

Geno, last year I snagged that link from that other forum before it was deleted. I've been going through their threads today, but the few posts where people posted the link are getting edited right away, and now they huge announcements of permanent bans for anyone else who does it.
I'm taking care of my two kids all day, otherwise I would pay for the feed, but I'm checking pokernews' coverage (which I think is excellent, btw) every few hours to get the details. Besides, it'd be a damn miracle for anyone other than Yang to pull out a win now, it looks like.

See, this is how the final table was supposed to go last year. Some donkey has all the chips and the rest of the table rips him apart.
Posted Wed Jul 18, 2007 3:13 am GMT by xDiamond_CutteRx
Well, I still think Yang is the most inexperienced and a little too aggressive in the wrong spots and might still get in trouble, but I have to give him credit for getting in with the edge in the flipaments more often than not. I still think his call with AT vs. Lam was a little silly, even though he had slightly the best of it.
Still too early to tell. I think Lam has a shot if he hits some cards; not so sure about Rahme. But it's Yang's to lose now, just as it was Gold's to lose last year.
Posted Wed Jul 18, 2007 4:06 pm GMT by Geno
A dominant performance from Yang then although I'm not sure too many people will rate him as a champion.
Posted Wed Jul 18, 2007 7:11 pm GMT by Jernej Zorec
i agree with what many say(on other forums), he was only one playing aggressive
and early on the 3 players basically shiped the money to him because they couldn't figure him out and were not patient enough
i still don't like him thanking god so much, but thats other issue
from his story i can understand him though and relate just a little bit
he was nice tho and it is definitely good for poker in US to have a nice champion like that.
and surely FT pros will make sure his game improves

Just watched Event #6 which was a PL Omaha event. When Devilfish busted in third, he was pretty upset but was so funny with his abuse of the other players. Classic line "the way these guys play, I expect the dealer to win". So proud he's English
Posted Tue Aug 14, 2007 5:47 pm GMT by MrDarling
Did you see that hand were he mucked after his turn bet was called?
I just watched event #28 where Helmut DOESN'T make his 12th bracelet. He kept asking insurance from Ivy and by the time he bust, his winning were not enough to cover his debt to Ivy.
Posted Sun Aug 19, 2007 4:35 pm GMT by Geno
Watching event #8 now which is NLHE and has Hellmuth at the FT getting insurance off Ivey on every all-in.
First let me say that I do love Phil Hellmuth despite his antics but during this FT, he has been a bit of a donk with the things he says considering how successful he is..........
Example: He is quite short stacked and raises J2o UTG 7-handed. The player on the button re-raises with AKo and Phil starts going on and on about how no-one respects his raise. Surely raising UTG with nothing while short-stacked is a total donk play?? He has 6 players to act ahead of him, he will inevitably have to fold to a re-raise as he has no chips to get creative with and he is only in with a hope if all 6 players have been dealt very poor hands, the odds of which is statisically slim.
What am I missing here other than that Phil is at once a total douche and a total legend?
Posted Sun Aug 19, 2007 9:32 pm GMT by Sean_in_NJ
| Geno wrote: | What am I missing here other than that Phil is at once a total douche and a total legend? |
He's forgetting that the quality of "poker smarts" that he's running into now aren't nearly what they used to be. So his plan of "I'll raise here and since I'm so short-stacked everyone will have to put me on a hand since I'm clearly inviting action and everyone will have to fold" isn't going to work nearly as often as he thinks it should.

Episode two of the 2007 main event coverage focussed on Joseph Hachem (amongst others) and this is really the first time I have seen him play poker since his ME win in 2005. I have to say that my assessment of him in the past as being a great poker ambassador seems to be completely wrong given that he is a total douchebag at the table!
Is he always an obnoxious prick when he's playing or was he hamming it up for the cameras? Outside of the tables he seems like a cool guy
