Ha, me and my friends like to use them when we play. We only use them for novelty. It's basically like a side competition who can bring the funniest card-guard. My favorite ones that I've used was a little wooden pig, and a small rubber sandal.
But on a serious note, do you use them? Why? I know it signifies that you are in the hand, and will not be folding, etc, but there has to be some other reasons. Alot of players usually just use their chips.
I'm personally fond of Dannamens(sp) little globe.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? I usually use a chip from my stack. I have a friend that used a hockey puck as a card protector because he was a huge hockey fan. I thought it was kind of stupid, since the puck covered most of his hole cards.

I just drop a chip on top.
I used to have a "lucky penny" that I would use. The penny itself wasn't lucky, but it actually said "Lucky Penny" on it.
My girlfriend had to go to the bathroom when we were on the NJ turnpike once, so I stopped in a rest area. While she was doing her business, I noticed one of those machines that take a penny, and for .50, will press it into some sort of stamped medallion type thing.
So, I essentially spent $.50 to turn a penny into something completely worthless.

I figured most would just drop a chip. But that chip has no character xD
Must have been a dent in the bankroll Sean.

They are so when you are playing in a casino, the dealer doesn't muck your cards accidentally, or other people's cards don't hit yours and your hand is ruled dead.

Sometimes I'll use a loonie or a toonie (I suspect you Yanks have no idea what I'm talking about ).

Just a chip. Anything else and you might as well have a wife beater on that shows off your poker tat.
