frequent problem

Posted Thu May 06, 2004 1:21 am GMT by krakajak
i'm fairly new to the game, and here's a problem i often encounter, but don't know how to deal with. i'm playing .25/.50 nt. the flop is either unraised or has one small raise. i flop top pair with a good kicker in late position. there is no flush or straight on the board. someone raises it a dollar or two. i call. a garbage card drops on the turn, and they go all in.
i don't wan't to go all in if he's got 2 pair or a good pocket pair, but at the same time, i have a good hand, and don't want to be bullied out of it. what shold i do?

Dont call his bet, reraise him and take control of the hand w/ a top pair and good (A or K?) kickers.

If he goes all in, then fold. If he checks to you on the turn, fire another bullet, if you sense a trap, then check the river and see what he had.

If you call he is going to sense you are weak. Do not let him think that. If you raise most likely he will either call or fold. If he folds great, you just won the pot. If he calls then on the river he will probably check. Raise again.

Now if he reraises your reraise, you might want to get out. In most cases they wont though.

i see the problem here.. "..bthe flop is either unraised or has one small raise.../b" you weren't the raiser.. if he moves all in on you you're done.. you didn't raise that pot.. it was never yours..

now had the opener bet... then you raised (you did have top pair and a good kicker didn't you?) then you'd be in a totally different situation..

Once a player know's he can get you to fold with a big bet, your night is over. Sometime your gonna have to call his hand. You can't play scared.

I do agree with a lot of people here. You NEED to play aggressive. That is a must. Once you have top pair, put a good size raise in there.

A raise in this game is a lot more than just a bet. It's trying to get information. You raise, he reraises, he got something. He calls, maybe he's on a draw ot a med pair. Use the power of the raise to learn what kind of hand he has.
