Total rookie entering 1st tournament. Advice.

Posted Mon Jul 21, 2003 12:39 pm GMT by bangsb41
Hi,
I am going to be entering my 1st no-limit tourney in September and I need a lot of advice. First, I believe I have good instincts, i.e. good intuition regarding probability & stats and the courage to NOT stay in. The tournament will have a mixed bag of players, I suspect. It's at my University, so they'l be some bright players but I don't know if there will be any aces...
Any good references, tips to get started learning? I know the rules and some very basic strategy to play tight, but I suspect I need more to win 1st!!! I want to win and will study as need be to do so!!!

Books/websites/etc...?

Just a follow up....I'm going into a game of unknowns. Surely, some wild players who get in on everything, some who fashion themselves as good, etc...

It isn't a public tournament, nor is it professional...it's a novelty tournament (almost). How do you play into this, i.e. get a good feel for what's what? As in a game plan.

mmmmm

You need to read, listen to experience, and above all play 1000's of hands!

I would set up an account with an online site (I play at UB) and enter low stakes NL tourneys, UB have $1 tournies everyday.

Stick to the starting hands you decide, Sklansky has good advice on these, bear in mind, the later in position you are the looser you can be in an UN-RAISED pot.

In the early blind levels, only play your biggest hands, you have to decide if the risk is worth taking when you have something like 10 10. In the WSOP Phil Helmuth doesn't turn up for the first couple of hours!

Try and gradually change gears as the blinds increase, I consider going all in with half a hand when I have about 7 or 8 times the BB left.

In a tournament you are balancing survival against your depleting chips, a lot depends wether winning is important, or finishing as high up the money order as possible. If you want to win you will have to gamble more and hope.

I wrote this quickly, but I hope it some help.

The best of luck in your tourney
