Tournament vs. Table play

Posted Wed Jul 23, 2003 8:11 am GMT by BrianGre
Hi all,

I've found that I can do well when in a non-tournament setting, but everytime I attempt a tournament I end up folding the hands that would have won and staying with decent hands that get beat... <g> I know "story of my life".. <g>

Are there any tips for Tournament vs Table play that might help?

Thanks
Brian

Perhaps we should work on writing a few articles about tournament play. I could rattle on and on about the subject, but the fundamental part of doing well in tournaments is survival.

You have to change your play from normal ring games because you only have so many chips to work with, and once those are gone, you're gone.

A good example would be a flush draw. Lets say you have the nut flush draw after the flop. The pot is already raised up preflop, and three other big stacks go all in (why, I don't know).

Some players would call this hand, thinking they have great pot odds. Thats true, you would. You'd be getting an excellent return on your investment if it hit. But what if it doesn't? Two out of three times you do this in tournament play, you're going to lose the hand. And if you lose all your chips (excluding rebuy tournaments), you lose the tournament. Thats it. No more.

You may win the hand and be the big stack at your table, but if you keep playing draws like this, you're going to have your chips eaten away in no time.

Biggest piece of advice I can give is to stay away from draws as much as possible. And if you see another player drawing for that straight or that flush time and time again, make him pay heavily to see those next two cards when you've got a solid hand.

I hope that helps.

Thanks, Carson, that does help some. I've noticed that I can last longer by playing tighter in the beginning... it seems that some of the big betting, bluffers will either knock themselves out or will be way ahead and get even more arrogant.

I'd like to see some more discussion on this if you have some posts or instruction that you can show us.

thanks again!
