Going in with the best of it.

I don’t really know if I buy this poker cliché. While it might be a nice way to make you feel better after a bust, is really a sound, logical poker rule?

Many poker pro’s have wrote or said this advice, that as long as you go in with the best two cards, that all you can do. Is this true?

For example, I’m at a table that has three of four weak players, two mediocre players and a couple of good players. I’m really having no problem gathering up chips. Now, after the turn one of the good players, who has about the same amount of chips as me, pushes in and everyone else folds. Now let’s say for the sake of argument I know I’ve got a slightly better hand. Let’s say I’ve got a straight and he is on the flush draw. Do I call here?

If I do, I’ll be going in with the best of it, but if he hits, I’ll be done. If I fold, I believe I can accumulate chips fairly easy. There is another bit of poker wisdom that says that the chip leaders should stay out of each other’s way.

Here is another thought. If I go in as favorite, even at a 75%-25% favorite, which sounds great, but I do it four rimes in a tournament, once of those four times I lose. If that one time it happens to be for all my chips, I’m done.

So what are the thoughts on the amount of a favorite you must be to justify taking the chance of going broke?
