antes vs. blinds?

Posted Fri May 21, 2004 9:50 am GMT by poe1
In the world poker tour they sometimes say how the blinds are 5000/10000 and the antes are 1000.

I thought NL Hold'em just used 2 blinds and that no one else paid before seeing their cards. What's the use of the ante?

Some games, like the WPT, use both blinds and antes. It's just the rules they choose to use.

The really big tourney use them both to try to keep them from lasting forever....it speeds up the process, as I'm told.

They don't usually kick in though until the blinds are over 100/200 or so.

I like the blinds wioth antes idea. It makes the blind steal so much more profitable.

The tournaments I've played in are like meatwad describes. Blinds rise every once in a while to a certain point, then antes come in. At each successive level, either the blinds or the antes (or sometimes both) rise.

While the intention is to move the game along, Bored is right, it really makes preflop play a much more important part of the game.
