What is the proper protocol with a check raise? Is it looked down upon? If I use it at a casino table, will the regulars get pissed? Etc.

As far as I know, its a normal part of poker but I am a firm believer that it is over-rated. It does have its time and place but I knwo too many people who use it incorrectly and cost themselves chips.
Example: You have a great hand and check, everyone else checks. Now you've given everyone else at the table and chance to draw lucky and even if you do win, you failed to gain any chips you could have got by raising.

Is check/raise considered improper play? Meaning, do people consider it a low thing to do?

Check raise is part of the game. If someone gets beat by it then their cards weren't strong enough or they didn't read you right to begin with. Because obviously, in most cases if you check raise you have something. It has bitten me in the ass and it has worked miracles. You can live and die by it. I personally like to put something out there to get a feel. Something small. If everyone calls it tells you more than you checking and the guy betting. He probably bet because there was a check almost all around the table.

A check raise is usually the sign of a weak player. I say usually because most people don't use it correctly. Its a play that should be used sparingly and NEVER EVER EVER on the river. I don't know how many times I see a guy check with the nuts (he's been drawing to the entire time and finally hit on the river) and he checks it like a jackass, saying later, I was hoping you'd bet. Why would you ever check on the river with the nuts is beyond me, I'll take the pot either way, I want to get my money in there first, at least then he can reraise me, if I check I might not get another dime.

some might, but who really cares. i'm there to make money, not friends. it's a valid tactic in certain situations, but Jauron is right about it often being mis-used.

I use the check raise a lot. If I think that I can steal a pot from a blind (rags on the flop), if I have a monster hand in early position I will check raise the turn, or if I make a drawing hand and someone has been betting strong I will check raise.
If you dont use it, you are leaving money on the table.

It depends who you're playing. The one time I played in a casino, there was a guy who was betting betting all the time (he must have rebought five times in the first hour). I landed a flush on the river, and knew a) that if I bet, he wouldn't call, and b) that if I checked, he would go all in.
I find check-raises work beautifully against agressive players.

Check rasies are a major part of the game. Even more so in a NL. Agressive people do seem to be taken down more when this. Cause they more often try to buy pots. If you know your opponent then you can use that in your method.
