beginner loose player playing almost every hand and winning

Posted Sun May 23, 2004 11:55 am GMT by darcy tucker
Im a beginner and my second time playing at a casino(5-10 limit) there was a kid in our game who said it was his first time. He played almost everyhand and won $340. Often people would not call him and let him win the pot without showing his cards. But when he did get called down he often lost..but he often won as well. When he left the game the players the other players mocked him and said that he was so lucky and that when he came back next time he was going to lose all his money. I never paid enough attention to see if he was getting lucky cards on the turn or river. But i don't think he was even getting that lucky then.I'm not experienced enough to understand what happened exactly in this game. I don't think he just got lucky on the flop, turn and river. He was doing something smart in the type of game he was in but i can't figure out exactly what it was and if i should have been doing it. Can someone please give me some insight into this?

did he play every hand, or did he just see the flop? Were there a lot of pre-flop raises, did he stay in if there were?

It takes a much stronger hand to make a call than it does to make a raise. If no one is raising, the kid can catch cards all day. If he stays in with a preflop raise, re-raise (if possible) and drive the kid out (keep in mind all the other variables that allow for this kind of play).

Force him to make mistakes. Is he always looking for that flush? dont make it worth his while to draw to it, keep the pot odds low (if you notice he follows this strategy).

There are a lot of reasons why a someone will catch "lucky" hands. Usually this person is in the blind with an unraised pot.

Hmmmmm thanks for the response. I'm having trouble answering your questions in my mind because I truthfully am not good enough to pay attention to all these details during a game just yet. (probably a sign that im not ready to play yet..lol). All i remember is that this guy would turn up his cards a lot at then end of the hand and win a lot...as well as lose a lot. And a lot of the time people did not call him and he would steal the pot.

if you're playing someone who will play any two cards, be prepared to have alot of ups and downs. They'll play that 6-3 suited and have it flush out on your top 2 pair, stuff like that happens alot in unraised pots. Dont get me wrong, there is a time to raise and not to. If you're the one who's always raising pre-flop then be prepared to be check-raised often.

Its not so important to see how many pots he takes down, but the quality of the cards he plays. If this guy will go to the river with any 2 cards, then be prepared for anything. If you notice he only plays small suited connectors, look for those small straight possibilities. If he'll play anything with a face (A-x, K-x, Q-x, J-x), look out for those 2 pair he could have by the river (if its just a high card and rags).

How would i play against this guy? Tight, aggressive. Play good starting cards, and bet into him. Did he raise on the flop? re-raise. If it didnt hit him he may fold, if not, you may have bought yourself a check from this guy on the turn (for half of that bet).

Another couple of tips: Read every thing you can, websites, magazines, forums, books (Brunson & Sklansky are classics). Watch poker on TV, from the sidelines in the casino, ring games, anywhere you can watch... do so! Play the lower limt tables online (.5/1, 1/2, etc.) before you go into a casino. It'll help for you to pick up on betting strategies and how to read a persons betting style (which generally tells you more about the quality of their cards than their "tells").

hope this helps!

if you like ring games, pick up a copy of Wilson's Turbo Texas Hold'em. Its the #1 poker software available as far as learning the ins and outs of limit hold'em.

I've been using it quite a bit and it's helped my limit game tenfold. Their website has a free demo available... check it out.
