Does anyone else here have problems with shorthanded games?

After having done winning a home tourney, and then coming out ahead consistently in 9 person buy-in games, I tried to play two games w/ four ppl. I absoloutely got destroyed. I tried to be aggressive, but every time I made a stab at a pot, I got re-raised. I assumed that A-4 would be the best hand, but then lost huge pots w/ it twice. I didn't know what to do! Play tight? I just couldn't seem top adjust.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any advice on curing it?

Four people is a really tough game. I wouldn't feel bad about getting destroyed; it's not something you get that much experience with just by playing regular games. It's a specialist's thing to do nothing but short-handed, and probably most people need lots of training to do it.

I'm very positive I would get wiped out almost immediately in one of those games and probably not even know why.

One thing I do intuit though is that hard and fast rules about card values are going to have to go out the window, as well as a lot of other hard and fast rules that seem to work perfectly well in normal ring games. So if you're a mechanical player, you're probably doomed. If you don't steal blinds or feel confident about knowing how to defend them in an extremely aggressive game, you won't prosper either.

There's a thread with some links listing good short-handed play threads and articles somewhere on the internettexasholdem site forums, as of just yesterday. Pokerpages also has some articles on short-handed play.

Supposedly being really good at these games is incredibly profitable, probably because it's not something even most very good players have mastered and so a little skill will go a long way and a lot of skill will make you really excellent money. But the bankroll swings can supposedly be enormous, so you can't do it undercapitalized(which is how most poker players do everything).

I'd love to learn how to play these games myself just for that reason, but first I have to stick to just learning regular hold'em for a long, long time before I reach that level.

i almost never play with more than 2 other guys at the same time. what you need to do is loosen up, try to get a read on these guys and bluff strong when they show weakness, don't give anything away. play aggressive, show 'em who's boss, that way they'll be afraid to bluff you which is a very valuable(sp?) move in shorthanded games. and when you get a hand like AA or big slick, slowplay it, it usually holds up in shorthanded games, let them bluff into you and take them down.
i also suggest seeing more flops than you usually do with low connectors or suited hands, if it's cheap that is.

I love short handed games. As long as its no limit. Limit short handed sucks. I do best in the late stages of a Sit & Go when its down to 3 or 4 people.

You mention you did well in a couple of tourneys. Didnt they get shorthanded at the end?

A,4 is not that great of a hand. Even shorthanded I dont like to play it much.

hey A4 is at least worth a call if the blinds aren't eating you up.
