Hey all, played a little of the usual friendly homegames I play in, $10 buy-in, .25/.50 NLHE.
Tonight, this girl that plays with us occasionally, but whom isn't the most well-versed in poker (she's constantly had to ask about hand rankings, even to this day), made two astounding plays, that I feel deserve mention.
And yes, both were on AA... hear me out ;P
She gets dealt the rockets, and there is a decent sized raise preflop from our notorious loose/maniac/aggressive type. She smooth calls.
Board comes fairly low, straight possibility... maniac bets $1, girl calls.
Anyway, by the river, the board looks something along the lines of 5 7 9 9 Q or something. Maniac type draws the girl all-in. After long and hard deliberation, she drops. Now, that's not the toughest lay down I've seen, scary board, but meh. Knowing this crazy player, you'd be tempted to call that, and as a novice, most people tend to overvalue hands, at least from my experience, and she is usually one of thsoe players. I would've done the same, but still, i was proud of that play. Maniac had pocket 5s, for the boat.
About 30 minutes later, similar situation, though she took the initiative pre-flop with her bullets. board is similar, two clubs, this maniac is a flush nazi... draws hera ll in on the turn.
Something along the lines of 4 10 8 10. Couple of clubs. He moves her all-in. A complete and total bluff this time (J 5 offsuit or something, he was drawing dead). Maniac had checked the flop, and moved in on the turn, I believe. She thinks long and hard, calls with her rockets, and doubles up, nearly busting him.
Her thought process, explained to me afterwards (keep in mind, this is from a girl who has consistently lost and has asked me multiple times if her straight beats two pair, or whatnot)
"Well, obviously I knew he didn't have the ten, he wouldn't have checked. So I figured either he was bluffing, or on a high pocket pair, where obviously mine was higher."
I did a double take. Here she was, clueless almost constantly, and she makes that judgement based on very sound observations and acted accordingly.
Not to mention, our maniac thinks he's better than he is, and thinks that this girl is easy to manipulate, so he was saying stuff like "Ahh you're just gonna run away and fold" when he had the boat, and then "You' probably have to call this" when he was bluffing, but I dunno if she consciously picked up on this crap. I tend to block it out with him, he spews random bullshit no matter what the situation, which is actually pretty entertaining.
She ended up losing the majority of her profits to me though. That's what she gets for slow playing her strong hands
I'm sure some people out there have some similar stories, so lets hear em... lets hear about those fish that have flashes of brilliance hehe

I think she played the first aces way wrong. She should have raised preflop. I never just call. Good laydown though. and good read on the bluff.

Oh I agree as well, I'm not saying her game is airtight, just that she naturally played a very sound game of poker, but it was for very short periods of time.
Hearing her thought processes on both of those actions made me think she'd really have a good head for the game if she wanted to dedicate herself.

Yeah, but the way the board came down she would have lost as I've seen most maniacs call ridiculous bets preflop with nearly and hand (esp. pocket pairs). So yeah, she probably was too weak preflop, but it wound up working for her.
