We were playing hold em at my place yesterday and came across a situation we didn't know the rule for.
My hand was 9,4
My buddy had 9,6
On the table was 9,5,5,A,Q
So my question is: Did my buddy win the pot with his 6 kicker (9's and 5's) or do we split the pot with 9's, 5's and use the A on 4th street?
Any help would be appreciated !!
Thanks

As always, each player makes the best five-card combination to compete for the pot. Players usually use both their hole cards to make their best hand, but this is not required. A player may even choose to 'play the board' and use no hole cards at all. Identical five-card hands split the pot; the sixth and seventh cards are not used to break ties.
In this case, you both have two pairs, with Ace kicker... so it's a split pot. For you, Q-4 doesn't count because it's the 6th and 7th card, same thing for him.

I'm from Riverview, New Brunswick.. Thanks for the reply... My buddy and friends thought that you need to use your two hole cards for anything but a straight / Flush or full house. Then you could use 4 of the house cards.. But I was right as your answer tells me.. I lost a whole $6 over it ... OH well I will print your post for the next Poker NIght )

Yeah that sucks... at least next time everyone will play under the same rules.
You know what, I used to live in Moncton and played a lot of poker there... Actually, I'm taking the month of July off to go to Moncton/New Brunswick (nice to be a student, I just finished my Master degree and I just need to say it because I'm so glad!! ). and oh yeah, I will play lots of poker of course!! Ever went to Halifax?? They have poker tables at the casino...

Yeah, go to the Casino quite a bit. Mainly play Craps or Roulette. Got on one Hold Em Table and lost $100 in like an hour. Best hand I got was pocket 4's.
Figure I got to play more home poker first, then I want to start heading to Halifax on Saturday's to play with the big boys
I was amazed that the guy's I was playing against at the casino were so good. Twice one guy folded but called what cards the other player had. They also all new each other on first name basis so I as soon as I sat down I knew I was screwed. But wanted to feel the rush of playing with some real players.
My buddy's will only play LOW limits.
No blinds but everyone ante's 10 cents
first two rounds has max bet of $1
last two rounds has max bet of $2
So the most you can wager in one hand is $6 and that is if you go $1 before the flop. (Which if you do most of them fold and you get a pot of 50 or 60 cents , the ante's)
Oh well I'm hoping that once they learn the game a bit they will get braver and put a higher limit.

Yeah, I went to Halifax a few times, I'm pretty much even altogether. Might go back in July.
My friends in Moncton play No-Limit. There's no actual buy-in, you bring whatever you want. Some start with $20, some with $50. Last time I played with them we were 15 players.
I probably can get you a seat if you're interested, next time I go to Moncton (in 2 weeks). We're all 18-24 years old, me probably being the oldest.
