Bad Beat - the most overrused phrase

Posted Sun Jun 20, 2004 9:25 am GMT by Scott1101
I'm so tired of hearing people talk about "bad beats". It seems I can't play an online game or a game in a casino without someone complaining about getting "rivered" or bad beats. Many times the person is complaining because their kings got cracked when they tried to slow-play them. Or on the flip side, a person who had no business calling a raise pre-flop catches a small pair or two and gets smashed when the raiser has high trips.

Even in cases where it just comes down to someone drawing out on you by catching some 1 in 42 chance on the last card, poker will always involve a large luck factor. If you want to eliminate luck, then play chess. When you lose you have nothing to blame but your own play.

Sure, it's frustrating to lose at poker especially when you play a hand "correctly" and a poor player beats you with a hand that should have never seen a flop. But stop complaining about "bad beats" and people getting lucky or "rivering" you. Learn to play a true game of 100% skill, 0% luck like chess . . and stop whining about bad luck, bad bets, getting rivered, whatever.

Yah I was at a table the other day where I guy went all in after a flop of K-Q-9. He got one caller who had Pocket Ace's. Turn comes Rag, River A. Then the guy with K-Q starts complaining about his bad beat. I'm like buddy, losing to Pocket A's when he hits the set is not a bad beat.

Well, the fact is, having a turn or river card sink a bunch of good play is frustrating. I think most of the people that come on here and go off about it just need to vent . . . and that's part of what a place like this is for.

I don't understand, you talk about a large luck factor then say learn to play with 100 skill and no luck.

It's true that some people whine too much about hands getting beat, but I'm not sure where this rant is comming from, especially since it's inconsistant at best.

He said, learn to play a 100% skill game... like Chess. Addressed at the people who bitch about the times the luck factor goes the wrong way for them at poker.

Just to clear it up

A beat is when a good hand gets outdrawn by a longshot draw. A bad beat is when it happens to you.

Thanks for clarifying for me, Snoogins. Smile

And I wasn't directing my post at anyone on this msg board or anyone in particular for that matter. I realize that the reason people like to talk about bad beat stories so much is that it gets it off their chest.

All I'm saying is that in general as a poker playing group, we should all do a much better job of reminding ourselves that we play a game with a huge luck factor. Getting outdrawn and nullifying a well-played hand sucks, but it's going to happen many times if you play often enough so just deal with it.

It's definitely funny when people who didn't start out with the best hand complain about getting a bad beat. Like a guy who starts out with J9 suited hitting jacks and nines on the flop, then losing to a guy who started with aces who hits one on the turn or the river. "River card!" they'll say, or something like that. Hey, you definitely don't get my sympathy over that one.

It's bad enough to whine about getting a bad beat, but it's really funny when it wasn't even a bad beat in the first place. I see that quite a bit.

One that I think is particularly funny is when you call because you have a good read on a guy and know if he's betting, chances are you're not in that much danger. Your hand may not have the odds to call the hand he's representing, but you're pretty sure he doesn't have that hand. And the hand he does have, you either beat, or have the odds to try to beat.

Call him and beat him, and he'll say, "How can you call with just that?" Spout some odds sometimes, maybe, say he can't believe the terrible players or whatever. I almost never say it, but I really feel like saying, "I wouldn't call anybody else with this hand -- but I'd sure call you every time."

I don't want to chase suckers off the table though.

That's what really bugs me about a lot of these "bad beat" guys. They cuss out whoever wins, and if it's a bad beat, it's often a player you WANT on the table. Trying to chase off every player on the table till you have only rocks or good players is insane, but I routinely see people trying to do just that. Even people who are or think they are good players.

With some of their behavior, they could drive the suckers not just off the table, but out of the game entirely, forever.

One of the first things a good player should know is that a bad player is like a gift from heaven, a national, or in the case of the internet, maybe an international resource that could nourish us all given the right care and treatment.

That's one thing I think live casinos often have over net play. People know to make the crappy player feel welcome, at home, among friends. Lots of people play poker for all kinds of other reasons than winning; might as well help them feel they're achieving their goals. Love the loser, and hope he saves up some more and comes back with his next paycheck. Cuz the pros sure aren't going to make that much money off each other, if anything at all. Sometimes in live play, when all the suckers leave, the table just breaks up and we all go home or play a different game.

I guess the anonymity of the net lets some people vent their stupidity more than they would feel comfortable with in real life, but it sure hurts them more than they seem to know sometimes.
