Bad Beat or Bad Play by me?

I am a beginner so go easy on me. I lost a hand yesterday that ruined my whole session and still has me wondering whether I screwed up. Here's how the hand played:

It was a kill pot so the bets were double. I was in late position (2 before the button) and was dealt Jh 10h.

The first player to the left of the big blind raised. There were 3 callers and then I called. Total there was 7 players calling two bets before the flop so the pot was big. The flop comes 3h 5h 10s. Now I call my top pair (and flush draw) to the original raiser's (in early posistion) bet. The turn is 7c. The original raiser bets and I call (I figured him on a big pair and I had a pair of tens and a J high flush draw so one bet into a pot w/ about 20 bets in it seemed like a good call). Now the river hits a 10c. I have a set. He checks to me and I bet. He raises and I call. He turns over 6s 4s for a straight.

Did I screw up by not seeing the possible straight on the board? Was I too quick to put an early-posistion raiser on big cards? Should I have raised the bet on the flop w/ top pair? Should I have folded on the turn w/ the top pair/flush draw? Is this just poker? Any insight will be appreciated. The worst part of it is the guy started talking after this hand and played it off like raising w/ 6,4 suited in early posistion is a good move (in this case it was becuase I couldn't put him on it).

It wasn't a bad beat, but you out-played him and he got lucky. You should never raise with suited low gap connectors (like 35, 64) in early position, really never raise in late, call in late, probably fold in early. Good call on the turn, good call on the river. Nothing you can do there.
