Ive been playing hold'em for about 5 months now. It seems like im just a peice of crap at this game. Yeah, ive won a few times, a FEW. But everytime i learn a lesson i come back the next day and i lose more. Im pretty sure its me because the people i always play with always win, or dont lose as often as i do. Of course, because of this, im the laughing stock within my poker friends. I dont know what to do. Ive lost probly 200 dollars playing poker, probably only winning a total of like 60 with all my wins put together. Should i give up or keep trying?

Take a week off. Learn the game. Study the boards. And the try again. You can have a run of bad sessions but if you truly know how to play then you will(should) come out ahead.

Thanks man. I need to find out whats wrong with me. I think i have discipline problems, i cant lay down hands that look 'oh soo good'. Not only that, but most of the games i play are usually short handed (7 people at max), and i know i need to be agressive, but i dont think i am. I just wish i could talk to someone instead of having to read many articles trying to find my problem.

Its hard to find you flaw. you know what you flaw is. You might not know but you would know better then me. As soon as you think your behind drop the cards. As soon as you know you cant win drop the cards.

You might also have a huge, gaping tell of some sort too. I don't put much stock in them, but if you always seem to either: A) Have everybody fold when you get a hand or B) No one fold when you bluff, you might have one. Caro's book of tells, baby.

Don't worry man... first of all, let me tell you something, 5 months, it's not much... I've been playing for years and I still don't know the game... Laughing

Seriously, give it some time. Experience is priceless in poker. How often do you play?? If you play once every two weeks or so, how about you get more practice...

Let me give you 2 tips.

#1. Try online games. ONLY FREE GAMES though, don't you dare gambling, it will only break your game even more. On free games, you'll see that alot of players don't take it seriously: they will call anything, they'll go all-in with nothing, and that's true. I don't want you to go there and do the same, I want you to go there, and play seriously, play a tight game. You must learn to win not necessarily constantly, but consistently. To achieve this, you'll see that only a few starting hands will win you money in the long run. You'll see which hands can kill you, i.e. A-4 is not a good starting hand. etc etc etc...

#2. Analyze each hand. When you play a hand, either if you win or you lose, try to analyze it and see where you could've made more money, or where you could've saved some. Usually, when you lose money, it's because you played a hand that you were not supposed to play anyway, or didn't fold after the flop when you were obviously beaten. When you're online, it's easier to analyze each hand, but for home games, try to remember some when you win pots and when you lose some and see what went good and what went wrong.

I could write you a book, but there's a lot of better writers than me and a whole freakin' lot of better players than me, so I suggest you read their books. I know many here can suggest great books about poker.

I hope this will help. Remember one thing, poker is like any sports, if you want to get good at it, you must spend hours practicing it.

i would not get to worried, 5 months is nothing. If you want so solid practice, sit down deal six/seven hands and play each hand like it was your own. It will get you some time in and keep you sharp. However you may just want to read a book and such. Like others have said, online FREE games are good but do not gamble.

I'm fairly new to Texas Hold'em.

I played for fun, with no money probably twice a month last summer. Now, I play maybe three, four, sometimes five times a week with all my friends who now play.

We used to just play, but the other day we tried a tournament. I went out early. But today, we played two tournaments, both of which I won.

The only reason I won these tournaments is because of Doyle Brunson's "Super System" and his ideas of aggressive play, blind stealing, and bluffing.

I recommend you read this book.

I also thought Phil Helmuth's book would be a good purchase when I was at Barnes and Noble. Little did I know that he wanted to keep all of his little secrets to himself so he included barely any actual playing material in his book.

Therefore I think you should purchase Doyle's "Super System" even though it is $30.

And remember, be patient, the cards will come.

Hey, dude. Not cool.

(this is your cue for someone to say, "why, do you know Phil Helmuth?")

I play the game because I love it. I play with a bunch of people who enjoys it just as much. It's a great opportunity to meet with the boys, drink a few cold ones, and tell stories we can't tell at home Wink Laughing . We're having fun and that's all that matters.

Practice all you can, but have fun doing it. Smile

note:
i played today but i lost a little, however i played a little better so i didnt lost all of my buy in money by the end. i started learning how to scare people away and when to bluff at the right times. However there was this lucky f**k who always had the best hand when i had the second best hand. Oh well, it happens right? Its like they say, thats poker.

Any more advice?

REading books is good but all the books i have been reading all say one thing while the other says something else. I finally just took all the knowledge I have gained(which isnt much so far, im still new)and started playing MY WAY. I personally like to play tight occasionally paying to see a flop with a crappy hand. I find folding wins me more money than calling 8 times out of 10. Those 8 times I fold out of 10 I see the flop after someone raises and say to myself "Glad I folded " Smile

Well, you have to remember each book is written by a pro based on what works for them . . . maybe you should try finding a pro that reminds you of you, personality wise, and check out their book.

Personally, I'm a Doyle Brunson/Sammy Farha aggressive type - sometimes even when I shouldn't be. . .I guess that's the difference betwee them and me Smile
