This is a long shot, since I already spent 20+ hours searching for such an animal...
What to be able to connect with friends via IP and play Hold em.
The only place that I can find that allows us to create a private room is PartyPoker. We don't wont them raking our pots or wish to play for fun sometimes without random clowns. Further, if one could set all parameters for a game or tourney in a private game life would be good.
Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

This is not an informed statement but a mere opinion, but I would have thought that any poker software which is remotely as good as a decent online poker room is going to be very very expensive or they would be available to download all over the place. As far as I know, setting up a poker room such as Ultimate Bet takes hundreds of thousands of $$$ and I can't see u finding one.
PartyPoker are bound to rake your pots otherwise wot is the point of their business, looks like u'll have to get in the same zip code and play for real or accept the rake

Most all multiplayer PC games have IP capability. It could be as simple as a Hoyle PC game with multiplayer. A poker program is rather simple compared to a Rise of Nations or Warcraft3. It would be vulnerable to hacking and cheating, but you hope you can trust your friends.

Sorry I can't think of one off the top of my head, but as far as rakes and cost to setup, a large portion of that is due to security and having to deal with money and transactions.
The difficulty in building a poker game isn't very high, and adding ip with very limited security is certainly not too hard.

I found a temp solution at PokerRoom.com. Its the only site that allows you to make private play money tables. Oddly, you can't create tables in their software version, but you can in the web version (4.1). If you make a public game, it can be played from the software version. If you make it private, it is only seen in the web version.
Its not the most attractive game, but creating allows you to control...
Hold 'Em, omaha. Hi-Lo, 7 Stud, & Stud Hi-Lo
NL, PL
10-20, 25-50, 100-200 blinds
2-10 players
public, private
game speed: normal, adaptive, turbo
