Tournament Rule Question

Posted Wed Jun 30, 2004 11:43 am GMT by bobmein
Why do tournaments have the rule that a raise must be at least the amount of the bet during that round? I'm trying to convince a friend that is hosting a tournament to use this rule but I have no explanation other than," That's the way they do it in AC".

I dont know the real history, but take it to an extreme. If you have a pot of 200, and someone bets 200, should someone be able to raise to 201?

With unlimited raises and reraises, it could make hands very long. Also-remember that the minimum bet after the flop is typically the amount of the big blind. So blinds of 100/200, you can not bet 150 after the flop-it must be 200.

This rule is also useful for limiting your opponents options. If he has 800 remaining, and you bet, 400, he can only call or go all in.

Dave B hit it. It is to keep the betting rounds from going on forever, and to add more strategy. It makes betting more decisive. If you've been raised big, you have to reraise big.

Getting reraised by $5 on a $400 bet would be really annoying, and I think insulting to the original bet.

Before we started playing with this rule (long time ago in the infancy of our game) we had a girl that just wouldn't make change if she wanted to call with 1 chip. So if they bet's 20 to her and she wanted to call she'd put in a 25 chip without taking back the 5 chip. So then betting would have to go all the way around the table again. It was annoying as hell.
