So I play in a home tourney over at a friend's house regularly. There's a few of us who play probably 3-4 times a week (it's a small, $5 friendly game buy in). Tonight was my fifth time playing, I've taken 1st twice, finished 3rd once, and was taken out early prior to tonight's play. So we have 11 guys in the tourney. 6 of the guys are regulars (including me) and are pretty solid poker players, only one of these guys though do I consider to be on the same poker level as me. That leaves five fishes, everyone knew they were fishes.
For some stupid reason the guys wanted two tables, and we took a vote and it passed so we split into 6 and 5 and were gonna combine into 1 table when we got to 8 guys no matter how many were at one table at any time.
So here's the first hand, the blind is .5/.10
Six Guys at my table, the majority of them intoxicated in some way (high/drunk...remember it's a friendly game).
I'm on the button.
The cards are dealt, and I knew that this guy to my right (we'll call person A) is a new player so I figure he'll probably pick up his cards and look at them without even thinking that I might be looking, I see his Kh, 8h.
Everyone folds infront of me with the exception of person A, the person directly to my right, the guy with Kh, 8h. I take a peak at my hand Qd, 9d. I figure that I'll pay 10 to see the flop with the advantage I have over this other guy, I may be able to exploit it later. Everyone folds except the BB. Flop comes down Jd, 2s, Jc. BB and player A check. Knowing the playing style of BB I knew that he would have bet if he had ANYTHING, and since A checked and he's such a fish, I might be able to steal the blinds, so I bet .75. BB folds, like I suspected, and A calls. Next comes the flop, a Jh. A card that didn't help A or me. But for some reason, he raises .25, I call wanting to see the river since I already invested so much and if I hit a lady or a nine I know that I win.
The river comes As.
(J,2,J,J,A rainbow)
He checks to me, and knowing that if I just call that I will be down about a third of my chips on the first hand, I have to play this. I am a very aggressive player and without chips this early will hurt/criple my playing style. So I decide to bluff the fish thinking that there's no way he could call an all-in on the first hand being too scared.
So I go all in with my Queen kicker.
For some reason this guy (who is intoxicated by the way) calls, and I lose it all in the first hand.
I thought I should have played the hand more passively throughout, but honestly, did I play it that wrong...I mean, wtf calls with King high?
thx in advance for ur responses...

lol
Sorry, not laughing at you but rather the situation.
Kinda ironic huh?
You had information on this guy, information in fact that let you know that he had a better hand than you did, and you knew that if he called you were gone.
In fact you actually (in hindsight) had 2 pieces of information on this guy, his cards........... and the fact that he was drunk.
Drunk people are unpredicatable. who knows what was going thru his head.
Just goes to prove that oftentimes we aren't just playing the cards in the other guys hand, but more, we are playing the guy.
*thoughts on sneaking a peek at the other guys cards*
much like when overhearing someone speaking about us we will often hear things we don't want to about ourselves, when knowing what cards the other guy holds, that information can often hurt us more than it helps. (especially when he has higher cards than we do )

It's a "friendly" game for $5 and you're peaking at cards on purpose? Good friend.

being able to see someones cards aint cheating?
If he's dumb enough to expose his hand you have every right to look at it!
But it is kinda ironic huh?

You knew what he had and lost anyway? You're like some kind of perverse anti-brunson.
I find with a newb it's not the size of their bets but the number of cards they see that indicates their commitment to hand. . . a newb that sees the turn will almost ALWAYS see the river, and intoxication tends to make a person less conservative.

Doyle Bruson is a pro player, one of the top pros, infamous for his good reads. . . he's stated that he could beat almost anyone without looking at his pocket hand, as long as his opponent didn't know he wasn't really checking his cards.

that's what i thought, if there's a drunk person holding his cards very visible(sp?) in my friendly games, i just look in the other direction.
