Rounders Movie

Posted Fri Jul 02, 2004 11:59 am GMT by General Sal
I just picked up something from Rounders that I didn't realize before... did any of you notice that Mikey watches the 1988 WSOP, during which Johnny Chan wins it by flopping the nut straight.

In the end, Mikey flops a nut straight against Teddy KGB...

Foreshadowing! Yeah, very good... that's what it's called... well, here's a question....

in the scene with Famke Jannsen, Matt refuses her sexual pursuit of him. So, at the end of the scene, after she leaves, he takes his glass and throws it at the wall... why does he do this?

Has nothing to do with the Oreos.

I think he's thinking to himself...."that f''cking Worm!!!!"

dude - cause FAMKE JENSEN JUST OFFERED HIM SEX AND HE INEXPLICABLY REFUSED.

It's like when you chase and you don't know why, except slightly less annoying.

Thinking about it, at first, I thought it was strictly about the sexual frustration. Kinda like "Dang, I had the chance, why didn't I go for it? I don't have a woman anymore..."

But, it does seem the answer leans more towards his frustration with Worm. Hey, maybe, he couldn't get it on, because he had these debts to pay back on his mind.

Really, it could be a combination of the two.

I think he was just pissed at Worm.

And part of the idea of the movie was to protray McD in a glorified light. That is, the good, clean, honest poker player, as opposed to the shady side of the game that is Worm. So, turning down random sexual advances helps illustrate that.

Also, I think part of the theme of the movie was following dreams, and not running from your "calling" in life. McD's calling was poker. Everybody knew that. And as illustrated throughout the movie, nothing was more important to him than the game. He gives up his girlfriend, his education, and in a slightly less catastrophic note (though the WORST sacrifice, in my mind) sex with Famke Janssen. Plus, if you found out your friend was being a dick and cost you a couple grand, when he's thousands in debt and you're working nights to pay for law school... wouldn't you be a bit too pissed to want to get it on?

In all honesty I think the reason is that he is supposed to still be busted up over Jo, his girl of many years. I actually don't usually go get laid the very night of a bad break-up.

And it also had to do with the conflict in the player - the world of poker VS the straight world. If he'd gone with Petra, he'd have been giving up on his "real" life and going back to poker, and it's not that easy for him to just . . . give up and go back, because at that point of the movie, we still don't know if mike is a winner, and his return to cards still may represent a fall from grace.

Or, maybe I'm overthinking it - could be he found out he was 8 gs in the hole and it combined with the whisky to cause an effect not even a powerful telekinetic could overcome. . .
