Major W.S.O.P. Bad Beats

Posted Sat Jul 03, 2004 7:52 am GMT by wEbMaStEr
just browsing around i saw these on http://www.pokertop10.com
I don't agree with the order these are in tho unless they are in reverse order of badbeatness Laughing
So next time you think you got a bad beat........ just think how Phil Ivey must have felt!

Brent Carter beats Barbara Enright, in WSOP $10,000 Main Event in 1995

As we detail in our list of top Women poker players Barbara Enright is still the only woman to have made the final table in the WSOP's Main Event. This is despite television's insistence that Annie Duke has achieved the most. Not only did she place 5th, but she got knocked out after a tremendous bad beat.

Here's how it went down.....Everybody had passed and Barbara was in the big blind with pocket eights. Brent Carter (a well known poker pro) was in the small blind with a 6-3 and he completed the blind. Barbara then moved all-in (with a medium sized stack!) and Brent calls risking all of his chips. Brent flopped both a 6 and a 3 for two pair, knocking Barbara out of the WSOP in 5th place. Ouch!

Layne Flack demoralizes Philip Marmorstein, in WSOP $1500 No Limit Event
Layne Flack won two gold bracelets at WSOP 2002, in two separate No Limit events. At a very memorable final table, it was down to Layne Flack, Philip Marmorstein, Johnny Chan, T.J. Cloutier, and Carlos Mortenson... WOW!

Here were the chip stack standings:

Mortensen, 170k
Flack, 195k
Cloutier, 175k
Marmorstein, 80k
Chan, 170k

Now for the action.....Marmorstein (a famous backgammon player) was on the button, and Flack opened for 15k, and Marmorstein called. The flop came 10s-10c-8c, and both players checked. The 4d hit the turn, Flack bet 15k, and Marmorstein called again. Another four, the 4s, hit the river, and Flack moved all-in. Marmorstein practically beat him into the pot, and you know why, because the hands were as follows:

Flack, 10-10 (quad tens)
Marmorstein 4-4 (quad fours)

Unbelievable! Flack had flopped quads, sucking Marmorstein into the Turn (which gave him a full house), leading to the River giving him quads as well! The odds of this happening are astronomical. Marmorstein goes home stunned!

Robert Varkonyi scalps Phil Hellmuth on Day 3 WSOP Main Event 2002.

Although this particular hand match up is not unheard of, it did become a particularly famous bad beat. With 60 players left in the Main Event, and blinds at $1200-$2400 (+ $400 ante), Robert opened the betting from early position for $8,000 with Qc 10c. Hellmuth re-raised $17,000 more from the small blind, holding Ah Kh. With action back to Robert, he declared "I'm all in", and shoved in his remaining $98,000 in chips. Hellmuth thought long and hard, and called the bet. The rest is history, Varkonyi pairs up and world champion Phil Hellmuth gets sent packing.

The beat gets even worse however... Phil later on was doing commentary on TV for ESPN and declared “If Robert Varkonyi wins this tournament, I’ll shave my head.” Ironically, Robert goes on to win the WSOP Main Event, winning the last hand with a full house (yes, he had Q 10). Out came the electric shaver, and Hellmuth's final bad beat had been administered.

John Shipley cuts Phil Ivey down in 2002 WSOP Main Event Day 3

For those that recall the Big One in 2002, a man named John Shipley from England came to the final table with most of the chips (we won’t mention what happened to those chips). He didn’t get there, however, without someone taking an enormous bad beat… and the unlucky recipient was young superstar Phil Ivey.

With less than 100 players left, Shipley and Ivey see a flop of A-3-x. They both put in over 130k in chips each, and John is all-in.

Ivey shows pocket 3s for trips
Shipley turns over AK for a big pair of aces.

At this point Ivey is a 50 to 1 favorite to win. The turn brings another ace, giving Shipley trip aces but Ivey a full house. Finally, the river brings the last ace in the deck giving John quads. Phil Ivey never fully recovers from this and finishes 23rd, while Shipley continues his roll to the final table.

Chris Moneymaker sucks out Humberto Brenes in 2003 WSOP Main Event Day 4

Everyone should know who Chris Moneymaker is these days, and many ask was it luck or skill that won him the $2.5 million. Well, I can guarantee you that the flamboyant Humberto Brenes from Costa Rica might have something to say about this. Now, if Moneymaker didn’t know who Humberto was then he’d be likely more poised. However, Chris certainly did know that Humberto is world class having won over a million dollars historically at WSOP.

And here’s what happened… After getting heads up, and seeing a flop of K-9-2. Brenes makes a huge bet of $70,000. Moneymaker studied him through his mirrored sunglasses, and shouts "I raise you all your chips" - about $120,000”. Wagging his finger the playful Brenes said, "I call." And Moneymaker suddenly becomes visibly ill.
Moneymaker shows pocket 8s for a pair
Brenes flips over pocket aces for a bigger pair, and he is an 11 to 1 favorite.

The gods were with Moneymaker, however, because the turn brought the eight of clubs. Moneymaker knocks out Brenes with an enormous bad beat, significantly launching him to a chip lead of $1.5 million by end of Day 4. It turned out that this wouldn’t be his last bad beat to inflict on a well known pro in the Big One…

Chris Moneymaker gives Phil Ivey Déjà Vu in 2003 WSOP Main Event Day 4

Two players that we mentioned above collide at around 4am late into Day 4. The total player count is now down to 10, and the next one knocked out lives with the fact that he missed the final table of the world’s greatest poker tournament by one spot.

Phil Ivey started out with pocket 9s, and Chris Moneymaker started with Ace, Queen. Moneymaker started the action by raising, and Ivey just calls (Phil starts out being about a 6 to 5 favorite). The flop brings two queens giving Moneymaker trips and Chris suddenly becomes a 12.5 to 1 favorite. Chris keeps Phil in the hand, however, and guess what falls on the turn… a nine! Moneymaker makes a huge bet of $200,000, and Ivey who now has a full house announces he’s “ALL IN”. Moneymaker confidently calls building the pot to over one million dollars.

Both players show their hands, and Moneymaker remembers the same pain in his stomach that Humberto Brenes delivered just the day before. Could he get out of this dilemma as he had with Brenes, is it possible? The dealer turns over the last card, an ACE! Moneymaker triumphs again, administering Phil Ivey a blow he will never forget, re-sucking Phil’s full house with a bigger full house.
