Nobody Ever Bluffs!

Posted Sat Jul 03, 2004 6:44 pm GMT by wEbMaStEr
Except you!

You ever notice this?

You didn't hit on the flop but there's a pretty good looking board out there, so you bet out big representing the Ace or straight or Flush or whatever, the guy calls you or raises you and BOOM!! man you were busted on the bluff!

Or alternatively........ you are convinced the other guys huge raise is just yelling bluff at you! I mean look at the board! there's nothing there! and what with no preflop raise he sure as hell doesn't have a pocket pair! so you go over the top! thats right! re-raise his pot robbing ass! teach him a lesson! BOOM! he made top 2 pair or a set to bust you right back to the rail!

Crying

This is why this is only the second topic on this section!
No-one ever bluffs! ......... except you.

You catch people bluffing all the time, you just never see their cards unless they did it on the river.

yeah, or when somebody bets to hard for your opinion for what was in their hand and it still beat you? "Why was that nutbar all in on a pair of tens?" - he thought he could bluff you off a hand and if he couldn't, he'd try to hold up the tens. You caught him with your kings, but you just think he bet tens too hard...

One spot bluffing seems to work very well for me is on a 5 person max table. I have used it to grab many pots lately. The trick is to use it prior to the river. I don't want anyone seeing my hole cards on a bluff lest they know what I am up to. Laughing Laughing

I bluff and suceed alot when I don't hit my flop. You just need to set it up. I like to be the agressor and with a decent hand I'll raise pre-flop. Alot of the time if my AQ or what not doesn't hit I still come out firing at the pot and more times then not I'll take it down because I put in that extra bet before the flop. If you just called pre-flop, you're not getting a bluff past me because I'll fire back a raise at you just to see your reaction.

If you're a bluffer, bluffs never work.

If you're not, they always work.

Funny how that works, ain't it?

That's funny and true...
Bluffing really is a good strategy though. I guess I'm more of a conservative player so if someone bluffs I fold. This happens every time and the worse thing is, I know they are bluffing!!!

Let me tell you, back when I started playing poker about 3 or 4 years ago I went to a casual game with my buddies. Now, this bieng the first time I ever played real poker my knowledge consisted of people's stories and poker movies. Sitting down at the table I was convinced that bluffing worked, I just had the urge to win that big pot and show the cards to everyone (like most beginners do). 10 hands later I'm out $25. That night cared me straight. It scared me so much that I have a phobia of bluffing, I automatically assume if I bluff he knows my cards and he will call 100% of the time. Now and then in casual games for low stakes I will bluff rarely, but in serious games with serious players I have decided long ago that that tool will not be a part of my arsenal.

Now, why I brought this story up is because I believe that when a person gets burned on a bluff he develops a condition where he is unable to bluff and assumes his opponent sees through his cards. It takes a true pro to be called on a bluff, lose a good amount of chips, and be 100% for the next hand (or lifetime). For the rest of us, phobias develop. Anyways, that is my theory.

I typically play very tight, so when I do bluff it works fairly well because when i have to show my cards, about 80% of them time i'm showing a strong hand.

I don't understand people that base their playing style around betting a bluffing. After getting chased out of a hand 3-4 times any good player will start to recognize a bluff and call you out.

I am not a tight player very often. Often I will bluff almost nonstop in a cash game if I came in raising. Often I go overboard and cause myself problems. But one of my favorite things about this strategy is not having the bluffs work (which happens half the time at best), but getting tons of action on my big hands. This does not work if you are not hitting strong at least occasionally to make someone pay for a call. And it works less and less if you have strong players at the table, but when it works you can rack of chips really quickly :D , and tighten up as soon as people are wise.

Funny thing is i have alot of trouble bluffing when i am playing tight. I lose my courage, and it might just be my imagination but i seem to get called alot too. I'll get a big stack early in a tourney and then buckle down and only play good hands, and once the blinds catch up with me before i am short stacked i try to change gears. And all of a sudden everyone knows that Im bluffing even though i havent in over an hour and have only been showing down big pairs Sad
