A few questions

Posted Mon Jul 05, 2004 5:56 pm GMT by krakajak
There are a few situations that arise when I play, that I don’t know how to deal with. I would appreciate any insight. I typically play $1/$2 limit, and I rarely play in the same room for more than 30 minutes, so I don’t have a chance to get too many reads on other players.

1) I get 99, I raise, and everyone folds except big blind. Flop comes Jack, rag, rag, and big blind comes out betting. Should I believe he has a J?

2) I get AK in late position, I raise and end up 1 on 1 with the big blind. Nothing but rags flop. He checks, I bet, he calls. Another rag comes on the turn. He checks to me again. If I bet, and he has a small pair, I’m throwing away my money unless he folds, but if I check, I show weakness. What should I do?

3) I have nothing in late position, and it checks around to me. I bluff and get one caller. Do I continue my bluff on the turn and the river?

4) I get AK in late position. I raise, but a bunch of players behind me have already paid to see the blind, and they call my raise. The flop comes K,9,5. It checks around to me, I bet and get a caller or two. Another 5 comes on the turn, and I get check-raised. Should I fold right there, should I call and see the river in hopes of a King, or should I call his raise and river bet, in case he is bluffing?

depends.

1) I'd re-raise, esp. if the rags or the jack and one rag are suited - fire a shot at knocking him off a draw.

2) check if you don't think he'll fold. In NL, consider a big raise if he's a tighter player.

3) Only keep bluffing if you don't think the flop fit his hand. If you bluff out and he raises you after a garbage flop, he's proably got wired something or paired his kicker.

4) That's a hard one. He could have lower kings, or a nine-something. For him to have trips he'd have called a raise with a pair of fives and a kicker, so the scary hands he could hold are 9-5 (which you have to think he would have folded) or K-5, and you've got a couple outs agaisn't that. . .i'd probably hang in, but I don't know if I'd fire into this. The ball-kick on this will be if it's a semi-bluff of K-9 or KK

These rough calls are why you have to do the best to know the people you're playing. . .

sounds to me like your need to bet bigger. People who want to bluff normally dont bet big because they are scared of someone calling their bluff and losing their money. If I dont have crap in my hand and someone raises big, 9 times out of 10 im not gonna call him just to see if hes bluffing. On the other hand if he raises a minimal amount I might just call to see what the next card is.

Also if you are getting a pair, AK in your hand, flop K95 you should bet big. Push people out of the pot and if someone calls or raises you and hes tight then he probably has a 2 pair.

Skel, the thing is, I play limit, so all I can do is put in one bet.

Maybe the answer is that I should just play no limit, but my bankroll took a big hit when I got AA with 2 very aggressive players to my left. It was like it was against their religion to let a pot go unraised pre-flop. So I decided to limp in and re-raise big. Of course, this was the one hand where neither of them raised. (I had been in this exact situation before and got my aces cracked, but it looks like I didn't learn my lesson). Flop is 9, 6, 2. I bet the pot and little blind calls. I put him on a pair of 9's or 7,8. He might have 2 pair, but I have to take that chance. A jack comes on the turn, little blind checks, I bet the pot, and he calls again. Now I was sure he had atleast 2 pair. Some rag came on the river and he checked to me again. I knew he he had me beat, but it was like I didn't want to admit it to myself. Every rational impulse in my body said "check." But inspite of all this, I bet the pot anyway. He calls and turns over a pair of duces.

So I told myself no more no limit till i win back my bankroll playing limit.

First things first, in this limit (1/2) bluffing rarely works. People are too willing to call when it's "only a buck, or only two bucks". So keep that in mind.

I would reraise and see what happens. Chanes are high he has the Jack, but by reraising you may get a check on the turn which, if you don't hit your 9 gives you a free card on the river. Depending on the turn and river cards, I would probably check down the river or call one BB depending on the size of the pot (pot odds).

Personally, and this will vary greatly, I'm gonna bet again. At 1/2 limit I don't put it past people to check call with a high overpair hoping to hit. If a Q or J hits and they bet I'm probably throwing the hand. Your play on the river will depend on the read you have on the player. Is he going to call another bet (assuming he's checked to you) even with one of the lowest pairs or will he throw it away?

I can't really say, this one is really tough. If you have no read on your opponent it's really hard to decide. Is he checking to you or are you first to act? If he's checking to you, I'm checking and hoping for something to hit me.

Again, it might not be the right play, but I'm either re-raising the raiser to see what he does or check calling to the end. Like I said earlier, bluffing rarely works in 1/2 limit, but ALOT of people try it.
