WPT Championship Chip Stacks?

Posted Fri Jul 30, 2004 11:27 am GMT by wEbMaStEr
Ok so i'm watching the championship final and before play even starts i'm thinking "why are there so many chips on the table?" Mike Sexton duly informs me that there are in fact 17 million on chips on the table, altho the way he puts it.... "There are $17,000,000 dollars worth of chips on the table"
so i'm thinking "ok hold on just a minute there bub, you just said the prizefund was a world record $8.5 mill or whatever, so why the hell are you now claiming there is $17 mill in chips on the table?"

I reach for my calculator and quickly divide the 17 mill by 340 or something, whatever many players he said started, and it turns out that for there to be that many chips on the table each player must have started with 50,000 in chips !

Why so many chips? I mean i'm aware it doesn't matter a damn how many each player starts with as long as they all have the same, it could be 500 it could be 5000 it could be 50,000 hell it could even be 5 million, it does not matter.
except for 1 small point.... it looks better on tv if the 6 final players are sitting there with HUGE stacks of chips in front of them.

Personally it would annoy me to be playing with 4 million in chips in front of me especially when i could just as easily be playing with 400k or whatever.

Yeahyeah i know, it doesn't matter Andy !!! it's all relative !!!

But it annoys me!!!

For me this is just another example of smoke and mirrors being used by WPT for their overblown production.

Is it just me?

Haven't seen this, but yes, I agree. If I was playing the game I think I would be pissed to have to deal with that many chips. Wouldn't mind getting my picture taken with them in front of me ( Laughing ), but come on. I'll have to keep an eye out for this episode so I can see what you are talking about.

Is it possible the tourney was a rebuy event? I'm pretty sure there are a couple of those on the WPT.

If my memory serves me correct, that tournament was a $25,000 buy-in.

So maybe they just gave everyone double that in chips. Odd, I suppose.

Yeah this was the £25k championship finals.
sorry Embarassed just a lil rant against wpt for their overblown production values Razz
Of course it makes good television to say "yeah this guy has $7 million in front of him.
The fact that he doesn't actually have $7 million but rather 7 million in chips just didn't seem to matter Razz
sorry, i like a good rant now and then about otherwise trivial matters Laughing

webmaster, most of the people on here are too young to remember pinball machines, maybe you're too young too? I dunno . . but I always had the same issue with pinball machines. The scoring in them was always in the hundreds of millions!?! It was so difficult to remember what your high score was or to compare with your buddy unless you could remember 9 or 10 digits! For god sakes, if you hit the flashing yellow bar, give the player 10 points instead of 175,000, right? Smile
