Phil's ego strikes again!!!

Posted Tue Aug 03, 2004 10:37 pm GMT by humbleman
I just watched the latest WSOP 2004 installment and Phil H just continues to amaze me. He has got to be the biggest egomaniac there is. He's good, but not the greatest. His parting comment to his friends after he got knocked out:

"I guess if there was no luck involved, I'd win all of the time"

Frigging amazing, it's a wonder he doesn't claim to be God yet!!

You dont give him enough credit, hes one of the top players out there, like norman chad said "he doesnt win with grace, and he doesnt lose with grace." Of course hes gonna get upset going out on a hand like that, and he was probably right about not being able to play any more perfectly, not to inflate his ego but hes right.

PHil is a great player. It always seems like he goes to a suck out tho.Like the 2003 when he got beat by a third jack on the river.Aslo the us poker championships.Lost to a 7 on the river.I mean hes a great player but he whines too much.I still respect him very highly.

Yeah Hellmuth is a great player, but I don't respect him as a person. The last thing I, and I'm sure a lot of others, want to hear is someone saying how great they are or whine like a baby when they lose. I'm glad the kid one, that's what poker is. He did get lucky on a few hands but that is the game. He played excellent poker at the end. I give him a lot of credit.

like he said phil's
1st in money (raymer didnt win yet)
1st in bracelets
1st in money finishes
youngest to win the main event
he can be cocky all he wants, he can back it up.

Good for Phil Hellmuth, does anybody else care about his wins besides him?

Nah! He probably thinks he's better than God, although the rumour that he has been seen walking on water have yet to be confirmed Smile

I like watching Hellmuth's tantrums, they make me laugh sometimes.

To: Nate PT: My opinion (you know what they about opinions) if Phil HellMOUTH is such an "Excellent" player why is he "Not!" winning more games. It's about getting the cards (or not) and more about luck. Better be Lucky than good. I guess I can't stand Pithy people. PH is one of the worst. As my wife once said about PH; "Dont You Just One to Go Up And Slap Him?" Laughing

I have no opinion on the guy one way or the other. But I will say this, he played like crap!

One hand to mention was when he had a King and flopped King, Ace, and rag. Phil bet, Hoyt raised him. The turn brings another K and Phil checks. Hoyt also checks knowing his Aces are no good if Phil has a King. Thats the play I don't quite understand from Phil. Was he going for a checkraise that just plain backfired on him? Then the river brings another Ace and Hoyt wins the pot with Aces full of Kings beating Helmuth's Kings full of Aces. Helmuth then said "You've really been sticking it to me" to which Hoyt replied "If you had bet the turn you would have taken the pot from me." The look on Helmuth's face was priceless.

I'm not a big fan of slowplaying trip Kings. I'd bet and try to take the pot down when you can. Hoyt bought himself a free card with his raise on the flop and ended up winning the hand.

They were talking about the WSOP not the WPT rerun last night. You are right, Phil tried to get too cute w/ an agressive player and it cost him in the WPT vs Hoyt

I'm not "under" crediting Phil. He has repeatedly demonstrated that he is one, if not the, strongest Hold'em player out there. It is impossible NOT to know that fact since he goes way out of his way to let you know it each and every opportunity he has a chance to speak. Confidence is one thing, but his ego (per this thread title) is in a whole separate category by itself; and that is not meant to be a compliment. :D

Humbleman's right. There is such a thing as winning and losing with class, which Hellmuth does not show. That has nothing to do with his talent; the nine hold-em bracelets show he's clearly one of the most talented player (if not the most) out there.

Anyone remember last year's WPT, when Antonio Espandieri knocked him out, then stood up and started waving his arms. Phil stands up and tells him to "shake my hand and show some class."

I guess it's ok for others to show him some respect, but at the same time, it's ok for him to whine, complain and berate other players when they beat him.

I was watching Phil the other night on UB playing $200/$400 2-7 Triple Draw. One dude was raping him consistently. He must have taken about $5k from Phil alone in a fairly short time period. A drop in the bucket for Phil, but man did Phil get all bent out of shape. He went off on how this other guy made horrible plays and got lucky time and time again. It was hilarious, cuz the other dude was mellow and just took it (and phils $) with out firing back any verbal volleys of his own. He actually got Phil so fired up that he sat-out for a several hands before coming back vowing to reclaim his roll. Another guy then jumped on the table and claimed he was green to this game. He also won quite a few hands and got Phil worked up moderatly. This guy however was quite witty and difussed Phil's anger and comments with some pretty funny non-agressive comebacks. It was all very entertaining and enjoyable to observe. The best thing was, unlike the lower stakes tables the observer chat is locked out on these high stakes games. I didn't have to weed through all the "Loved your book Phil", or "You're a cry baby Phil", etc... crap.

I personally love watching Phil play. I think he is the best "reader" in all of poker. On top, of that, he is hilarious to watch when he loses. Some hate it, but I find it entertaining. He is the John McEnroe of poker.

Phil's one of my favorite players.

I try to model my play after his actually. However, if I'm sucked out because someone called my all-in with AJ against my AK and they catch a jack, I don't berate them. I do say something like, "Hey, I'll go out like that, can't get my money in in a much better spot."
