Gambling is illegal here.....

I live in Utah, home of the LDS (Mormon) church and it's followers. Needless to say, this is a very conservative place. The alcohol laws are very restrictive.

Most importantly, ANY FORM OF GAMBLING IS ILLEGAL. That means it's illegal to participate in sports pools(March Madness), lotteries, raffles, or small stakes poker among friends. No prizes are legal even if they are given by a sponsor.

According to Assistant Attorney General Thom Roberts, any gambling is illegal if it contains all of the three following elements:
1. People pay to play
2.The game has an element of luck
3.Winners obtain something of value (cash or prizes).

The good thing is law enforcement doesn't see this as a priority in crime-busting. There's a local tourney every Saturday, and a sheriff plays with us. He even shows up in his cruiser!!

In the newspaper article I've gotten this info from, a Captain from a local police station was quoted as saying, "I have never heard of it going on. It probably does, but I have never heard of it." Yeah............

That's what I love about this country though. States rights to be different from one another. Utah attracts conservatives with similar ideals, Mass attracts more liberals with similar ideas but we're all still Americans.

I dont know if this is true. I do live in Utah and I thought it was fine to play for prizes and there are acutally places set up for this such as http://www.bigslcpoker.com/. - Most these places are a rip off though. During the weekend you pay $20 to play on a "qualifying table" and 1st place gets to play on the final table that happens the following tuesday.

So they may have 10-15 qualifying tables collecting $200 per table so 15 tables would be about $3000 Then the final table plays and the winner gets a prize equal to about $200-300 (Xbox, apple ipod, etc.) I think the other places get something like DVDs or other small prizes. It seems like only 30% gets paid out to prizes.

One thing I also do not like is qualifying tables to get to the final table. You could have 3 of the best players of the tournament sitting at one table and only one can advance to the final table. Plus the blinds get so high when it is heads up that it almost becomes a coin toss at times. I much prefer tournments where everyone starts at the same time and you combine tables as people go out.

Anyway.....
