the plan yesterday was to have about an 7-10 player tournament at my house but in the end we could not get enough people to come so, me, my buddy and his little brother decided that we would just have a buy in game and cash out when we are done. i have never done this before because we have always played tournaments. so we played shorthanded dealers choice. man was it a loose game.
games played: NL/PL hold'em, NL/PL omaha ( great game to play shorthanded). seven stud, and razz (my new game of choice!!)
so i bought in for 8 bucks. my buddy bought in for 6 and his brother for 7 we are all teenagers so this is a ton of money for us..lol after about 45 minutes im down about 3 dollars so i rebuy for 2 and after about 2.5 hrs of playing i doubled my buy in and made 10 bucks not a bad pay day for a guy with no job.
scum bag move of the night: probably made by me. i dont think its wrong because i read daniel negranue (SP?) did the same thing. playing heads up between me and my buddy. i have 10, 4 flop comes J,8 X,J,8 i end it by saying i have 2 pair jacks and 8's he says well u got me beat. maybe not ur most ethical play but it worked.
lesson learned tonight: i spent the first hour worried about how much money i lost and how much i had left, so i decided to just play without even caring about the money i was just gonna play the cards. and well since i doubled my buy in i guess it was theright thing to do.
i think i will be playing more of these buy in games.
well i just thought i would share my first cash game experience with you.
thanks

When playing cash games (or in a casino for that matter), you have to keep in mind that you play with monopoly money. Say the buy-in is $20, it's basically like you would buy a 20 dollar pass for the amusement park, you won't see that $20 back. You have to adopt that attitude because say one guy raises you $10, some might get scared because for them, $10 is a lot of money and they don't want to risk it, so they fold. However, if you play with monopoly money, you wouldn't care, you're just there to have some fun, but the goal is to win, so you want more monopoly money, so you play well... you know what I'm saying?? The point is, you must not care if you lose money.
Same thing goes to casinos. At a $10-$20 table, one hand can EASILY cost over $100 (even $240, which is the max.). So, losing $200 in one hand can happen, and for most of us, it pays a lot of bills.
All in all, when you bring money to the table, keep in mind it's now monopoly money and you lost it. I'm glad you learned that lesson.

I always think of the money as gone when I take it out the car bringing into the poker house/hall/wherever. Then, if you win or go even...it's like a winning night.

That's not money in front of you. Those are just chips of different colors. I know a girl who bets "I'll bet 3 green chips" or "I'll call your two white chips and raise you 3 blue ones". It's great. Everyone thinks she's an idiot, but she's just playing with the chips like that's exactly what they are-just chips. She usually walks away even or up too.
Great lesson to learn in your first cash game!
Just remember this: You may not double up every time you play. Heck, you may walk away empty-handed, but it's just like learning to ride a bike. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep playing.
By the way, I like the "scumbag move of the night". I don't think that's unethical at all. If you say you have two pair and your opponent doesn't recognize that they have the same and they muck their cards, then you deserve to win that pot. I've had that happen before myself. I just smiled and raked in the pot. Nice play!
