Thanks to the info and advice from some folks here, and a friend who invited me to go with to Trump Casino near Chicago, I had my first 5/10 experience, and it was great!
I've played tons and tons of home game poker (twice a week or more for a year), and also some of those charitable game events in the chicago area, but I'd never played poker in a casino (I've been to vegas and played other games, just not poker)...
Anyhow, I sat down with $200 (and another $100 in my wallet in case I felt like I was playing fine but just not getting cards or whatever, and needed more chips), and the first hour or hour and a half, I got nothing after nothing after nothing...
Finally though, things turned around a bit, and I started winning some chips...
My $200 was at one point up to $950 or so, and I should've left then, but I stayed around until it was down to about $650 after losing a few huuuuge pots in a row.
One note I didn't realize (maybe I missed it when people mentioned it) - Trump's $5/10 table is a kill table, so be prepared to play some $10/20 hands. If you're not comfortable with that, either fold during a kill pot, or don't play at trump, I guess.. (or play 3-6, but I've heard nothing but horrible things about 3-6)..
Anyhow, the experience was great... I know that I can't expect to make that kind of money every time I go to the casino, and should expect to lose my fair share of visits... but it was such a blast, I can't wait to go again.
Thanks to everyone who posted information about chicago casinos, info on little nuances about casino poker, etc.. it all came in handy...
I can only hope to have another insane monster pot like I won last night... This guy showed up at our table and wanted to get more action going so he did a couple of live straddles.. the last time he did it I had 44, there were, for some insane reason, 8 people in the pot (it was a respectable and tight table usually), and it got capped to $25 preflop...
Long story short, I hit my set on the flop, it held up, and I took down a pot of probably around $400 or so in ONE HAND... holy crap.
Can't wait to get back to Trump now
