It's a phenomenal movie. Shade is not that great.

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 12:57 am GMT by Ben4040
The movie frustrates me but I won't say why because I don't want to ruin the movie for anyone.

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 1:36 am GMT by Nate PT
I think I know why but you have to remember 90% or more of teh people that watch it wont pick up on that because they dont play poker or dont know what theyre doing when they play. Anyways its a great movie and Shade sucks so dont see it.

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 1:51 am GMT by Fat Tony
this is truly a "must see" movie....even for non-poker fans. (are there any??) :D

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 5:28 am GMT by wEbMaStEr

Razz

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 6:14 am GMT by Geno
I have the biggest smile on my face EVERY time I watch it. It really is that good. The bit with the judges...........well, I'll say no more but if u don't smile loads at that bit, u r dead inside Razz

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 12:05 pm GMT by darcy tucker
Ben what are you talking about and Geno what part with the judges? hmmmmm i feel foolish but i can't figure out what you guys are talking about.

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 12:08 pm GMT by Geno
Rolling Eyes I don't wanna ruin it but Matt Damon walks in on a poker game being played by the judges and...........

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 12:14 pm GMT by sam farha
Haha...I'm really anxious to see this movie now I'm gonna try to rent it or buy it tonight...

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 1:32 pm GMT by darcy tucker
Geno you just really find the part with the judges amusing right? There is nothing i didn't understand in that part right?

Ben what frustrates you about the movie?

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 1:47 pm GMT by sam farha
Dont ruin it for me :D

Posted Sun Aug 08, 2004 10:39 pm GMT by Nut Flush
Sam, I suggest renting it for now. If you want to buy it, there is a special edition coming out in September I believe so you may want to wait.

Posted Mon Aug 09, 2004 12:25 pm GMT by Matt T
I thought it was good but the ending kinda disappointed me. I kept thinking, "That can't be it, it can't be over. They wouldn't end it like that!"

It can, it can, and they would/did. Maybe they'll make a sequel and finish it.

Posted Mon Aug 09, 2004 12:43 pm GMT by Geno
The end is perfection! (esp as the titles are topped off with Baby, I'm a Big Star Now by Counting Crows the greatest band in the world :D)

Posted Mon Aug 09, 2004 1:10 pm GMT by j0sh
I'd recommend waiting for the collectors edition to come out next month before you buy it. But rent it anyway, its awesome

WARNING: While I am trying to NOT give anything away, I am making references to the movie that might reveal things. Read on at your own risk.

Quote:
Baby, I'm a Big Star Now

This relates to the reason I was disappointed. The way the movie ends, he is not a big star (yet). I waited the whole movie to find out what happens "when he actually got there" if you catch my drift. But the movie ended just as he was leaving. So it seems that the song doesn't really 'fit' unless it is supposed to be foreshadowing the end result.

But I am picking nits, it is a good movie. I was hoping the two main characters might go heads-up @ the WSOP final table.

Question: Was Rounders entirely fictional or was it based on a particular player's true story?

Posted Mon Aug 09, 2004 1:43 pm GMT by darcy tucker
If kgb and him made it to the wsop final tables the cheese factor would be huge. I thought the ending was great. It's a lot more believable to think you could someday be a mikey mcdermott rather than a phil ivey prodigy.

Posted Mon Aug 09, 2004 1:51 pm GMT by Matt T
Actually I was referring to Worm, not KGB. He played KGB enough in the movie. But never Worm.

Posted Mon Aug 09, 2004 2:50 pm GMT by dakine
Ha! Poker Movie Critics. It's worth the $3.98 to rent it. Nuff said. Wink

I gotta disagree, and this is a good discussion making me wanna see it again, I think the end is in EXACTLY the right place. Even without some cheesey WSOP end, I'm still left with the stupidest grin on my face and butterflies when the cab drives off bcos the point is that he has pulled himself back from nothing, defeated his arch enemy KGB and you BELIEVE that he will win the WSOP. That is enough for me and in movies, some of the best moments are implicit - you make the tale up in ur mind and u don't need it to be spelt out in front of u cos it's better the way u have it in ur head Smile

Geno's got it spot on. Now Ben, what the heck are you talking about. You have my interest way peaked. Come on, just stick a spoiler note on the top of the post and let us know.

Unless it's about the Judges seen.

Posted Tue Aug 10, 2004 11:35 am GMT by Ben4040
I honestly haven't seen it for a while, but I remember that I was really frustrated that Matt Damon's character continued to back Ed Norton's character. I understand they were supposed to be friends but the guy gets him into more trouble than it was worth. Throughout the movie I just kept asking myself when Matt Dameon's character was going to learn to just let the guy go and rot by himself. He was a cheating scumbag.

Posted Tue Aug 10, 2004 11:54 am GMT by Matt T
You gotta remember that Worm took the fall for both of them and did hard time for it. Damon's character (IMO) felt that he REALLY owed him big time for that. In the end, he felt he had repaid his 'debt' to Worm and they were all square. Or did I get it all wrong?

Posted Tue Aug 10, 2004 12:18 pm GMT by wEbMaStEr
Yes Matt you got it spot on, the theme of 2 buddies and 1 owes the other bigtime because he took a fall for him is a very common theme in a lot of movies (Right back to Angels with Dirty faces and prolly before Laughing )
Mikey did owe worm, it was down to worm that mikey was able to live his clean cut (kinda) life to this point, if mikey had gone to jail also then he may well have turned out like worm?
but as we know you can only do so much to help someone and in the end you may just gotta cut him loose, mikey had more than enough reason to do so.
As for the ending, the movie wasn't about the wsop, it was aboutthe debt owed to kgb really, i thinkthe tension of could mikey pay it off was a big enough ending really? The feelgood factor, when he not only manages this but manages to actually outplay kgb, pay off his debt to him, the judge and still go to Vegas with "3 stacks of high society" Laughing man that did it for me.
The "making it" was for him to get clear of the small(ish) cardroom games and grinding/roundering? and making it to the big leagues (vegas and possibly even wsop)
If the movie had gone on and he had gone to wsop and even been playing worm or teddykgb or johnny chan (who he actually got to play and best during the movie) would just have turned the whole thing into a cheesefest.
I would LOVE to see a Rounders II tho, give Damon 20 years or so to lose those boyish looks and get into his fat bloated elvislike phase, he's the old pro, been there done that, got the bracelet. throw in a prodigy for him to guide and boom! you got a sequel Wink

*sidenote* Geno? Counting Crows? and i thought i had bad taste in music? Laughing

I'm on my way to Scotland right now to kill you for that. Seriously.

As for Rounders, you are of course right about Mike owing Worm big which reminded me of perhaps my favourite Worm moment:

After they get their asses kicked at the policeman's game when Worm catches a hanger, they are talking while laying on the floor assessing their injuries and Worm deadpans at the most inopportune moment possible "You shoulda played those Kings". Classic :D

Sequels can only be bad news, especially when the original wasn't written with a sequel in mind.

Besides, you just described "The Color of Money."

See now that is unforgiveable because there is very little real talent there. Not only that but you are Scottish and male which dictates that the Dixie Chicks should not even be on your music radar! By all rights, you should be a big Zepellin/Springsteen fan............

Posted Tue Aug 10, 2004 6:44 pm GMT by YoungGun
You guys keep saying that Mikey owes Worm BIG time because he took the fall for him, but he only got expelled from school. I thought that Worm was in prison for making fake credit cards or something. Remember that part when worm says something like "I wasn't makin the cards, I was distrubiting".

I know this is pointless but I'm really bored!

Yeah i know Embarassed
Dixie chicks are a small blip on my otherwise totally cool musical taste radar.
I think its cos they are kinda country.... Scotland is kinda a country..... Laughing They ARE extremely talented singers/songwriters/musicians tho Very Mad

THis is one of the greatest movie of all time. A sequal would only ruin it.

Spolier

The ending was shear prefection. He made it back from rockbottom and made it to vegas. After beatin his nemisis Kgb.Hands down a spectaular movie.

Those of you that think Mikey should have cut ties with Worm just don't understand loyalty and friendship. Worm didn't do anything to merit Mikey dropping him. Mikey got his ass kicked? So did Worm, it's not like Worm was the one beating Mikey. Worm was a cheater? So was Mikey at one point in his life when he fixed the basketball game.

As for the ending, it was perfect. The final table of the WSOP wasn't even close to being in the scope of this movie. That's like saying the movie Rudy should have ended with Rudy winning the Super Bowl.

Final review: This movie is a must see. Edward Norton is the best actor of our generation, Matt Damon is also an amazing actor and John Malkovich is also great in this movie. The plot is outstanding and will keep poker players and non-players involved at the same time. Very quotable and is easily re-watchable time and time again.

So what about the $thousands that worm ran up in mikeys name at the poker room, when he was able to pay off and avoid the "juice"? or the fact that mikey underwrote his debt to Gramma, which is loyalty to a friend and which isn't?
people change over time, someone who was a true friend in high school can drain you like a leech for their own selfish purposes later in life, no matter how much you try to help them, if they aren't willing to help themselves, sometimes you have to cut them loose.
Yes this is the voice of bitter experience talking, loyalty and friendship are for those who deserve it.

You have to give him a chance though... you can't cut someone off in their first week back from the joint. I'd say he gets 6 months at least, then if he hasn't reformed any cut him off.

If a guy runs me up for just under $7,000 without telling me, gets my ass kicked by cheating in a game when I told him to stay away (which I'm playing because I vouched for HIS debt), and THEN hi-tails his ass out of town? You'd be lucky to still be alive after 6 months.

You can only "owe" so much.

Okay guys, I'm new, but I thought it appropriate that my first post have something to do with Rounders Smile I got introduced to this forum just recently by a regular and I'm liking the place already Smile

As for why Mike always backs up Worm... well, Mike sums it up pretty well with one of his own voiceovers in the movie:

"I know all the reasons I shouldn't be here. Sometimes reasons don't matter. See, no one's ever stood up for Worm. The guy's been kicked around his whole life, from his father on down. Maybe he's not the same guy he was when he went away, but I can't give up on him this easy. I'm all he's got."

They're best friends. That's what friends do *shrug*
