I was playing in an online No Limit tournament and, after losing in the early stages the previous couple of nights, I decided to play extra tight. (by the way I'm a poker beginner so please don't go mad if I get any of my lingo incorrect)...
I settled myself down with a pint of Guinness and a bag full of hope and off we went...
First hand, Pocket Tens. A couple of people called and the flop came 2s, 5c, Td. Nice, I thought. I bet 200 of my 1500 chips hoping some people would bet.. much to my surprise, the Big Blind came back all in.
I assumed he must have a pocket pair.. probably A's or K's and I was a bit nervous about going all in so early in the tourney but I thought, sod it.. I must be favourite with this hand and there was his 1500 chips that would have looked nice in front of me so I called...
He showed 9s, As.
You guessed... two bloody spades came on the turn and the river giving him the A flush.
I had Guinness all over my keyboard and my bag of hope flushed down the toilet !

Don't worry about that one. You got your money in there when you had the best hand. The fact that he went all-in with A 9 with that flop is the baffling part. Was this a free money tourney? Oh well, play that hand the same way everytime and you'll be raking in more pots than someone with A 9.

ballbp, it was a $1 Big Buck tourney at paradise. There is a free one as well that I've noticed people go mad with the All-ins at...
There's nothing makes your heart jump like the words "All-In" !!
:D

there's always some all-in stupidity at the lower levels.....especially early in a tourney. i usually hold back a bit until some of these clowns eliminate themselves.

You are right mate. I've noticed that there's a lot of action early on in these tourneys with people just going all in with second pair etc.
There also seems to be a lot of people who make a massive amount of chips at the start preying on these "suicidal all-in'ers".
I suppose the real skill is being able to ascertain whether you're up against some lunatic with a tourney death wish or some smug git with pocket A's :D
The next skill is being able to tell when the wheat has been whittled away and only the chaff remains ...
(So much to learn and only another 40 years left to learn it in)

going all-in pre-flop early in a tourney is very risky...even if you have AA. if you get four or five callers, there is a decent chance of them getting cracked. that said, i'd still have no qualms about doing it given the right situation.
