Some black dude with long hair just ran by my condo yelling something about "He called me with a Jack high!". Anybody know what that's all about? I'm in Florida BTW.

I think his name was Alex Powers...
Playing the WSOP Limit Hold Em Event, and Powers raised big and some guy called with a jack high...
I thought it was offending

dude didn't even have jack high anyway... i think it was K high. lol.
ya... powers was annoying. although unlike what's his name... i didn't find him to be disrespectful of the game in any way... just disrespectful to the ppl at the table.

I think Powers had K-high and his opponent had Q-high (which Powers mistakenly read as J-high). His opponent was right in that Powers was bluffing, but you have to be able to beat a bluff to call!
I agree that Powers was being an ass but I didn't think he was disrespecting the game per se. You wanna raise blind? Fine, go ahead, all day long buddy.

I did think it was a bit rude, as was the blind raise... but thats cards, you've got to be able to take the good with the bad I guess, and he was definately good at throwing people off... I thought it was also funny as hell to watch from afar on TV

Ya his oppenet did have Q high but wasn't this the hand where Powers caught a 4 on the river? He got away with a few lucky plays.
I remember there was one hand where he caught a 4 on the river to win as the other guy had no pair.

The hand where he caught the 4 was a different hand. He had everybody on tilt on that table. The opponent who called him with Q high was Jim McManus, author of "Postively Fifth Street", a great read if you haven't picked it up.
And yes, Powers as a d***. Raising in the blind is fine, but he was just an *ss, plain and simple.

Wow! you guys are sensitive!
I just watched this today, Ellix Powers was a nice, friendly, CRAZY card player.
I thought he was funny as hell, i don't think he was the best player in the world but he sure was entertaining!
He was incredibly happy to be at the final table and was happy to be on tv, he was happy to be taking home $40k at the least. he was a character something lacking in a lot of the more "robotic" players i've seen.
As for that idiotic, stuck up, moron Jim McManus, i coulda slapped him!
"you're disrespecting the game" what is he? the gaurdian of pokers genteelness?
what the hell is wrong with raising blind? if someone in my game wanted to raise blind i would be more than happy!
"you better call the floor man" no idiot! YOU call the floor man and YOU ask him if a player is allowed to raise in the dark.
Jeeez what a turd he was. and what about the hand before when David Chiu was it? raise in the dark on the river, why he not say something then huh?
Mcmanus was only peeved cos he got outplayed by Powers earlier and was forced off a pot which he THOUGHT he woulda won, but would in fact have lost him all his chips.
more power to Ellix Powers the guy was fun to watch!
and respect also to John Hannigan and David Chiu for standing up to Mcmanus (albeit after the fact)
If McManus had called me with a J hi i would have laughed in his face too!
for my money Mcmanus showed himself up.

Ummm...I have to disagree a bit Web. First of all, if you rewatch it I think you will find that it was John Hannigan (the guy you give props to later) who said "you better call the floor man". Regardless, it was NOT McManus. Yes, McManus made an idiot out of himself because he was tilted. I'm sure that was Power's plan. However, his whole, "he called me with Jack High!" rant outside was nothing but camera grabbing/idiocy (is that a word?). It did him no good at the table so it wasn't an act. That = *ssh*le to me.
As to the being happy to win $40K. I'm sure McManus was happy with whatever he won. That being said, has ANYONE here EVER been truely happy with less than 1rst place? Yeah, I'm always happy to finish in the money, and I'm not going to complain much, but I play for 1rst, every time. Heck, watch that FSN tournament (can't remember which one) where Negreunu get's knocked out and tells the camera, "65K?!...heck, I can't even buy a car for that!". He got all kinds of crap for that, and he admitted he made a stupid comment, but his point was, he was going for 1rst and thought he really had a chance.
No, Powers wasn't disrespecting the game by raising blind, I think everyone but McManus (and probably only at that specific point in time for him) thought this. That being said, I'm sure everyone else thought the guy was an *ss.
Oh yeah, and McManus seemed plenty happy to be out of that pot that Powers pushed him out of...I doubt that had anything to do with his little tantrum. Why would you get pissed because someone caused you to make the right play? You have to remember that these shows are spliced together. My guess is Powers had been needling the table for quite some time and McManus had just had enough of it.
And I'd bet money on this: Chiu and Hannigan were only standing up for Powers to put McManus further on tilt.
You can be good for poker without being a d*ck at the table. 'nuff said.
Bah, I really have to stop re-reading my posts, I edit too much!

yeah now that you mention it i think you're right it was Hannigan.
I don't deny that it would have been annoying to be at that table, but there are many people who are effective at getting under players skins.
It definately worked with Mcmanus and i think he did make a show of himself with his comments, altho it didn't work to Powers' advantage.
You make some good points JW particualrly Chiu and Hannigan further trying to annoy Mcmanus.
Whether or not he was good for poker??? maybe good for the players he's playing against? maybe good for the players playing fish who try to play the same way? I did enjoy watching him tho and i think that whole thing did liven up an otherwise potentially uneventful epsiode.
Be prepared fora lot more yells of "he called me with a J hi" tho
hrmmmm you know, this whole discussion gives me an idea for a thread
As for re-reading your posts...... It's a good idea, most of my posts get edited in some way

They replayed this last night on ESPN 2...
Ellix Powers had every right to raise in the dark...Why Not?
He was being an Ass...but it was to get the table on Tilt..
Looking back..Powers was far less disrespectful then Tony G was on his WPT Final Table appearance..
