I am extremely excited to watch this. I hear each player put up $400K of their own money! WOW! Who would be favored in this? I always think Gus has a chance to win any tourney, but at the same time could be the first busted due to his wild play. Love watching him though.

An excellent first episode. Gus' agressiveness was muzzled given the strength of the table and his suck outs on Chip and Howard I think, made him somewhat tentative. I liked the AK / QQ coin flip hands. Really shows that sometimes you just got to get plain lucky in order to win. Looks like there will be 2 episodes for each of the 7 rounds, so we get 13 more shows hopefully. Can't wait

Wow... an hour is just NOT ENOUGH!!!! Pretty good stuff! I wonder how they came up with that table?? And why Phil Helmuth was not included? Or is it that obvious? Can't wait for the next episode!

I was asking myself the same question, "Where is Phil Hellmuth?"
I'm guessing they asked him if he wanted to participate in the tourney. He probably declined, due to previous committments or he just didn't want to put up $400,000.
And wow, that is one high entry fee. I could not belive it was THAT high. Geez, $400,000 is larger than the first prize in most Hold'em Tournaments. So, who gets all the money? I'm guessing that the best player over 7 rounds gets most of it, although they haven't clarified that yet.
I love the final table. I haven't seen much of Chip Reese or Barry Greenstein before. I bet Barry took Hellmuth's place.
I wish FNS would show us more hands. I remember sitting through a bunch of commercials, seeing one hand, and then back to commercials. I was like, WTF?

I had a tourney run longer than I expected last night so by the time I turned on the tv it was over. Who won?
Posted Mon Aug 16, 2004 8:54 pm GMT by humbleman
They just showed the first 4 guys getting busted for the first telecast. Reese, Brunson, Cloutier and Greenstein were the victims. Ivey has a commanding chip lead, Lederer is short stacked with Chan and Hanson somewhere in between. Don't know the format other than there are 7 rounds, guess round 1 will end with next telecast. Also don't know if Hold'em will be the only game played either which is probably why we don't see Hellmuth since he does not excel in the other games. There are other reasons of course why he probably isn't there but I'll leave it at that. Don't know if there will be chip carry-over or what with the other rounds but it is all good nonetheless. I can't wait :D :D

Hold on. You look at that table and you say get rid of Reese? Uh...what? Reese has more reason to be at a superstar invitational than Barry Greenstein. He's a friggin hall of famer for Christ's sake.

I think this table could have used Hellmuth to liven it up a little. Everyone seems real tight. Not much talking or anything. I like to see guys having fun. ALthough I may act the same way if I paid a $400K buy-in!

That's why I like Daniel Negreanu so much as a player. He always seems like he's just playing poker with the guys. He's got a great attitude towards the game and you can tell he is actually enjoying himself.

Episode 2....Wow!!!!! Howard Lederer got awesome cards most of the time and played them well. Got lucky a couple times but showed a lot of skill (naturally of course) to emerge the winner of round one. Phil Ivey played well, just didn't get the cards that he needed and finished 2nd. Johnny Chan plain got robbed, had great hands and just got runner runner'd to death for 3rd place. Gus Hansen's aggressiveness worked against him as there were lots of great hands out there whenever he went for it, so he ended up 4th. Looks like they will be playing Hold'em for all 7 rounds, with the winners of each round getting bonus chips for the all important 7th round. This has turned out to be great and I can't wait for next week's episode :D :D

for some reason FSN showed episode 1 again at 9. i'm hoping new episode will be on late night

I read a story about this contest that said the participants actually were paid to be a part of this. Where did the $400K buy-in figure come from? That article I read might have been outdated.

Gus Hansen obviously played like a maniac to set up something later. He said as much. I think he just wants to be as unpredictable as possible, and losing now could mean winning big hands later.
Posted Tue Aug 24, 2004 11:14 am GMT by The D-Train
yes, that could definitely be his strategy, this first match he was just insane. i can't believe that lederer came out first place. i'm beginning to really get into this show. anyone know what ratings this show is getting. from some of the players i play with, few even know about this show.
Posted Wed Aug 25, 2004 1:40 pm GMT by humbleman
Dak: I hadn't heard anything about the buy-in being subsidized. I do know that the recent live event at the Whistling whatever place in New York, the big name players were basically flown in on a private jet, rooms comped and possibly some if not all of their buy-in comped as well.

Howard Lederer was on the "Best Damn Sports Show" before the first episode aired. Straight from his mouth he said they each paid $400k to play. Of course if they were somehow taken care of he wouldn't say that, but I am just relaying what I heard. I also read it somewhere too.

...I dont have FSN...does anyone know where i could perhaps dload them or anyone record them? :D
Posted Sun Aug 29, 2004 2:05 am GMT by Heiserman
what i heard is that the players were each payed 25k to entice them to join the event but they put up the 400k buy in themselves
Posted Tue Aug 31, 2004 9:30 am GMT by The D-Train
Let's not talk about how much they payed and more about how they played. Can't believe no one commented on part 1 of round 2. Lederer and ivey, who were first and second in round 1, got 7th and 8th in round 2. See how easily things can change. Gus hansen has not only built up good positioning in the final round, but he also built up a reputation that should be feared. Doyle must've got out of the wrong side of the bed. 7th in round 1 and 6th in round 2. Such a cool show, too bad not enough players know about it.
