Do you guys just play hold em or do you play where the money is?
ex: if your local poker room has a 15-30 hold em game (the biggest hold em game they run) or do you play a once a week hi / low pot limit omaha game or a 30-60 stud game? I'll be honest I think I want to make a small stride toward the professional game. Not because I have aspirations of winning a world series or be on t.v. i simply have trouble working for other people. I know it sounds crazy. Anyway I think need to become more diversified in games like omaha and stud. If I do try to make this step is it a neccessity to play different games. Your opinions are greatly appreciated.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

does not sound silly at all!
I recently read an interview with Brunson where he was talking about his early days, he had just left college and had went to work his first/only "regular" job, something in insurance or sales, i don't recall, anyways, he got his frst weeks wage slip, looked at how much he made that week and realised that it was just 1 decent sized pot in the games he had been playing. That was the last days "work" he did!
If you can make more money regularly playing poker then why not eh?
As to your question, this is something i've been thinking more and more about recently, I consider myself a Hold 'Um (tournament) specialist. This week i made more money in 3 days playing poker online than i made last month working. I am not great at other games but i do realise that it is important to learn how to play these, if not brilliantly, then at least better than others
I love 7 stud altho i am not great at it yet. I like Omaha (sometimes) i am not great at it either, but i am getting better at these. i tend to try and play at lower limit tourneys of these when i can, i may be dead money in them but i want that experience.
Hold 'Um is really where the money is (online at least) but if there's cash to be made in other games also........ then sure why not
It is not a necassity to play other games, Clonie Gowan was registered in something like 17? tourneys at this years wsop, all were hold um (pot & no limit) corect me if i'm wrong but every one of helmuths bracelets have been in hold um so it is not necassery to diversify.
Whereas someone like Negreanu or Lederer are in pretty much everything! inc. razz

really?
no
God no!
I have seen very little of the poker world! I live in a remote part of Scotland which in itself is a remote part of the UK, which in itself is a remote part of the poker world. I have been interested in poker (Hold Em) for a few years, but only been playing, via the Internet, for about 9 months. (altho i have been playing cards, mainly 3 card brag, since schooldays)
Everything i have learned about poker has come from this forum, other sites, studying poker on tv (WPT, WSOP, Late Night Poker) and playing on a daily basis.
You could say i am obsessed.
But no, i have seen only a small part of the poker world, altho i hope to examine it in greater detail over the coming years.
Like you, i too would like to make the step to playing professionally, it is something i love doing, i am quite good at it, i have potential to be better, and if i can make a living doing something i love, then i will be truly happy

I was raised on Hold'em but I have made a killing the past month on PartyPoker playing Omaha. My advice is that it never hurts to diversify because you may find yourself in the position some day where the action may NOT be in Hold'em but in some other game :D

I feel you should definitely diversify.
I feel very strongly about that, but won't bore you with a long rant. In a nutshell, more possibility of action, new thought processes, and more general poker experience. It can only help, and has helped me immensely.
It's not a necessity as was said, but I think it's very helpful.
And psshh, doesn't sound crazy AT ALL that you want to make a run at being a pro. I wish you luck with it.
If I were in the situation you described, making a run at being a pro, I'd play the 15-30 5 days a week, then sit the PLO game every time it ran ;P

My 2 cents. I know a lot of poker players--like 40 years worth. None of us started out as Hold'em players. We play it now because Hold'em IS WHERE THE MONEY IS!

Do you have to be a super memory master to play 7 card stud? My short term memory is shot to pieces by years of cannabis abuse
Omaha - isn't that basically like Hold 'em but with much higher standards?

Not really. You have to realize that there are A LOT more drawing possibilities out there when you have four pocket cards instead of two.
