The Universe Conspired to Help - Poem by Helmuth's Dad

Posted Fri Aug 27, 2004 9:26 pm GMT by ilikepoker
I haven't read many poker books at all (in fact only one!) and of all the great books out there, I chose a pretty mediocre one to start off with imho. The only poker book I have read is ahem .. ahem .. is .. ahem.. "Play Poker Like The Pros" by Phil Helmuth Jr. It had good stuff, but after reading it, I had lost sight of my own style of playing and my game suffered. It might have been the book, it might have just been me, so I won't offer too much more of an opinion on the book. By the way, the next book I read will either be supersystem or theory of poker. Anything else could lead me away from my own instincts, I think.

ANyways, the reason for this post is that I thought I'd share the best part of the book with you all. It is a poem that is in the beginning of the book. Interestingly, he refers to himself as Phil Helmuth Jr. and makes a note of dedicating the book to his parents "Lynn and Phil". At the end of the poem, the author is named without the "jr" so for that reason, I think it's his dad who wrote the poem. Anyways, all that aside, I still get shivers when I read the last part for some reason and I hope you enjoy it too.

The Universe Conspired to Help

The man had a dream
He knew what he wanted, it seems

Once he was sure in his heart this was it
He vowed someday that he would achieve it

He wasn't quite ready to do his thing
But he felt fairly certain what the
future would bring

When one day the time was right
When he was ready to fight the good fight

He conquered all his excuses and set forth
To take the risk-fraught first step
without any remorse

Once he took the first step down the line
The universe conspired to help make sure
he was fine

He never dreamed he would acomplish so much
That the universe would give him such
incredible luck

Now older and wiser he understood the hardest part
Was convincing himself that it was time to start

-Phil Hellmuth

obviously a poem NOT about his son.

I never picked up that this could've been his father who wrote this. It would seem to me that his Dad wrote this (if his Dad wrote) long before Jr. wanted to play poker, as his Dad scoffed at the idea of his son being a professional player.

I liked the poem a lot myself... I actually taped a copy on my bathroom mirror.

I have a theory about Phil. I call it my Prime Time Theory of Philativity. Actually that's the first time I've called it tha. In retrospect, I'm never calling it that again.

On days when Deion Sanders knew that the press was invited to watch his team practice, he would ride down to the field in a special custom golf cart with air conditioning and wear something stupid and flashy. He'd make a big scene and explain to everyone how he was the greatest thing since Guiness. BRILLIANT!

But on days when the team held closed practices, Deion got up early, got on his roadbike and rode however many miles it was from his house to the practice field. He kept his mouth shut and worked his ass off 100%.

Which Deion do you remember seeing on TV? :D

Yeah, and the universe can conspire to chew you up and spit you out too. Don't forget that possibility.

Two things:

1. Re: Deion Sanders - Did anyone ever see that footage/clip where some guy was coming at him at full speed, so Deion was supposed to tackle this guy. Instead he jumps out of the way! They used that clip when they're making fun of him. Why do this on national tv?

2. Re: Hellmuth poem - Funny that he would also write such a poem regarding the universe... it kind of fits his ego, as a psychoanalytic analysis makes it clear that he thinks he is the center of the universe.
