Dan Harrington

In the last 10 years Harrington has made it to three final tables at the WSOP. What a remarkable accomplishment!

The reputation and nickname "Action Dan" suggests he has a very tight playing style.

I was just wondering if somebody has something more to add to this?
How tight does he play? Folding QQ or what? I find it interesting that he has made it so deep in the wsop and would like to know his formula of success.

He's known as a rock by anyone that knows him. His favorite quote is "this game is about survival" and he does just that. I wouldn't say he would fold QQ anytime he gets it but he definitely takes a lot of things into consideration before he even gets into a hand. I haven't really looked into his overall strategies but he has no problem watching others play a lot before getting involved and it works well for him.

I've just watched the WSOP 1987 final. Guess who is in it? Yes, Dan Harrington.

The final table:

Bob Ciaffone $147,000
Dan Harrington $213,000
Howard Lederer $151,000 (He was only 23 years old, youngest finalist ever at that point)
Frank Henderson $215,000
Jim Spain $334,000
Johnny Chan $461,000

The first move of the final is, surprisingly, Harrington with a raise which Spain re-raises and then Harrington moves all in. Spain folds. Next hand, Harrington again goes all in with AQ, Spain calls with A6- a 6 comes on the flop and Harrington is out. Harrington at least put his money in with a dominating hand...

I noticed a difference in playing styles back then compared to now. A lot more of checking and calling, but also pretty desperate all in's with junk hands. When Chan plays heads up it's almost like a home game. With Chan about a 5-1 chip leader the short stack just limps in, make small bets, Chan calls and loses small, small pots before he knocks the guy out.

Harrington has got to be 1 of, if not the best tournament players of recent years, not even including the fact that he won the main event a few years back, last year he beat out a, then, record entry of 800+ to make final table, and amazingly beat out a record 2600?+ this year to make it back to back final tables.
Sure anybody can make it thru a huge field one time to reach final table, but back to back years? incredible.
He is a very solid player, maybe being too solid was his downfall at final table last year (altho i aint gonna tell him that Razz ) and he is grossly underrated.
Interestingly enough, if you didn't know this before, he is cousin to Padhraig(sp?) Harrington the golfer.

*sidenote on Lederer* in '87 this was his 1st year in wsop, and was his only appearance at the final table to date.

Dan Harrington plays very similar to TJ Cloutier. That type of style will get you to the final table VERY often if you can master it.

I read somewhere that Harrington's final table appearances in back to back years may be even more impressive than Chan/Brunson's back to back title wins because of the size of the field nowadays.

I dont know if its true but it's def. something to think about.

Yeah, Dan's got the perfect style to get through a huge tournament.

I can assume that players like Daniel Negreanu (Gus Hansen too?) will have to alter their play in upcoming World Series main events. Like Negreanu said, his aggressive style backfired on him as all the novices were unbluffable. Then again, players like Sam Farha see a lot of flops and, if they can make a big hand, can win huge pots as well. So, I guess it's one extreme versus the other. Ain't poker grand?

I assume that Dan plays sees the flop less than 10% of the time. I wonder if his blinds get stolen a lot, being such a tight player. Like Hellmuth, he seems to always get his chips in the middle when he has the best of it.

"I assume that Dan plays sees the flop less than 10% of the time. I wonder if his blinds get stolen a lot, being such a tight player. Like Hellmuth, he seems to always get his chips in the middle when he has the best of it."

I think less than 10% is way extreme. Barring an intensely aggressive table, you'd almost certainly see more than 10% of flops by only playing AA, KK, AK, and when you can see a free flop from the big blind. (Think about it.. if all pots went unraised and you folded every time it wasn't free, you'd see 10% anyway)

His blinds probably do get stolen... but even though he's a tight player, he's not a moron. He knows how other players act, and he knows how other players view him. Hence, he can also benefit from people trying to steal his blinds, by playing back at them, or letting people think they can push him around when he's got a big hand.

"How tight does he play? Folding QQ or what? I find it interesting that he has made it so deep in the wsop and would like to know his formula of success."

I'm sure there are times that he will take QQ to the felt, and times where he'll fold it preflop. I mean hell, even I'VE laid down QQ preflop more than once. If anybody could give you a cut and dried strategy that could get you to the final table at the WSOP, this game wouldn't be nearly as interesting as it is.

In episode 6 of the WSOP main event they showed a hand with Harrington vs David Angel.

The blinds were $3 000 and $6 000 Harrington were in middle position being dealt 10h 8h, he raised to $20 000 everybody folds to David Angel in the big blind who is showing two 5s. Angel re-raises to $50 000, Harrington then asks how much the bet was and says he is going to raise...then moves all his chips in. Angel looks troubled and says he hasn't got aces and then folds.

This played showed that having this tight table image earned him a decent pot without having a monster hand. Should Angel have called, tough, it should have been a coin flip anyway so Harrington didn't risk it all on total crap either.

On episode 5 they showed Harrington with two jacks up against two aces going all in. Dan made a flush on the river and won, but in this case Dan got lucky.

Skill and luck combined...

Harrington's all-in with 2-6 offsuit and making several good hands fold was a great example of how his tight play gets him such respect and then he turns it on you. Norm Chad did give him his props last night. 3rd last year and 4th this year? Truly, truly amazing.

Now buy a decent hat and a new shirt for cryin' out loud! Laughing

I couldn't care less about baseball, don't have a team I root for and think the game is immensely boring. And that hat is UGLY!
