Bad beat... What NOT to do your first time at a Casino!

Having just moved to Mobile Alabama and being an avid hold em fan, I decided to head to the boats for my first LIVE game. I was like a kid in a candy store when I got my checks. I wanted to show these guys that playing home games with a bunch of drunk guys made me the best! Wink

So I'm sitting at a 1-4-8-8 game where I just got K-Q suited. I'm in late position and the table has been pretty loose all night. Everyone on the table seems game preflop with no raising. Flop comes down K-K-J. I RAISE until I can't raise no more! This leaves myself and 3 others on the table. Trips Kings isn't bad! Turn Comes up with a J. That's it, I now have a Full Boat! I'm invincible! I get one raise and reraise myself! This goes on until we're down to 3. The river brings a dead card- 6c I think, and the guy to my left on the other site of the button checks but folds when I raise it from the guy to my right who just bet. The beting war is on. I'm blinded by my Full House! Why shouldn't I be? It was my first time at a casino with a Boat!? I kept raising with this guy until I came to the dreaded realization. Yeah, you guessed it. I called and threw down my boat just before he threw down his 2 Jacks... Crying

Yikes. No fun there. I've got an even sillier story, though.

I was sitting at a $4/$8 at the Bellagio with Adam (the other guy who runs this site), when a similar betting war was going on. The flop came something like 5h 5c 7h. A bet, a few callers, a raise. I think three were left to see the turn. 9h, I believe. A bet, a raise, one folded, only two left. River showed a 10, I think.

Anyways, these two guys kept going back and forth, maybe 8 or 9 raises until one guy was all in. The guy who was all in flipped over two 5's. He flopped four of a kind.

The other guy didn't seem to mind. Why should he? He smuggly called out "straight flush" and turned over 6h8h.

The guy who had his quads cracked got up and left.

There's no better tale of holdem than a straight flush beating a four of a kind. It's never happened to me luckily, the guy must have been sick as a dog!

As for the story that started this, the guy was pretty lucky u weren't holding pocket cowboys with ur betting but then I spose u did say the table was loose all night so we'll forgive him for not folding quad Js Wink

I got beaten by a straight flush with quad k's in a 7 card stud game about a month ago. We had one wild so I know that's not unheard of. The catch is I was using the wild for one of my k's but he had the s flush clean. Talk about a bad beat.

4 of a kinds being beaten by straight flushes are obviously not unheard of, but they even make ME cringe when I read about them...

Luckily in most casinos nowadays they have a Bad Beat Jackpot. This happens when Aces over Tens or better gets beaten by four of a kind or better. Casinos I play at pay between $25-40,000 for this kind of beat. The only catch is that both players have to be using BOTH cards in their hands, so your beat would not have won.

Hell, when I get a hand that will pay me the jackpot if I lose I'm PRAYING to lose...

one good hand I did have was JQs (diamonds) I get agressive a little and the flop comes 9-10-6 all diamonds! So Q high flush with poss straight flush. So I bet big and reraise on the flop to get out those possible K and A flush draws. Turn comes and it's like an 8 clubs, nothing on my flush, so I raise, and by now its headsup me and one other guy (who BTW was playing his first hand, he had just sat down). River comes and its an 8 of diamonds! I've got my hidden nut straight flush 8-9-10-J-Q diamonds. This guy obviously have the 7 for the 6-7-8-9-10 straight flush. I bet, he raises, I call (got to be nice, he only had like $2 left). He happily throws down the 7 and i turn up my JQ. Needless to say he was more than a little pissed. I don't really see why as he was nearly drawing dead against any flush and in reality completely drawing dead.

What you describe (s flush beating lower s flush) would usually qualify for a bad beat jackpot.

Last night in a casino the following happened.

I was big blind at a 4-8 kill table. This was like my tenth hand at the table so nobody really knew me, and I was down about $40. I got 6-6 (both red). Player to my left raised, next player called, and player at end of table reraised. Everyone else folded. Back to me. I figured I was dead, but called anyway. Player to my left reraised, capped it, everyone else (including me) called.

Ok, flop was 6-6-8. I had flopped quads. I had already been making noises about what a stupid call I had made simply to go in with these guys, so I made a sound of disgust and checked (being UTG at this point). Player to my left fired a bet, next player folder, and other guy raised. I called and player to my left reraised (you get the picture).

Turn was an 8, for a board of 6-6-8-8. At this point I'm hoping somebody had a pair of 8s. I wanted that jackpot. Anyway, lots more raising, and more calling from me.

River was an A. Same picture, only this time, when it came around to me I raised. I had been pretty much ignored to this point as the other guys were obviously AA against KK. They both stopped dead in their tracks and stared at me. Then they started asking me what I had...trips? FH? Flush (not possible), Straight (also not possible). Everyone called and we flipped our cards. They couldn't believe it. It was AA vs KK and I raked in a $400 pot.

I later got quad Ks at the same table (not a very big pot on that one) and later still got forced into a kill pot by being the big blind again with T2 suited and "stupidly" calling a raise. I flopped TT2 and just went along with the guy who made his nut flush (hehehe) and made about $300 on that pot too.

I did manage to get quite of a few of the players convinced that they should fold whenever I raised. Great table.

Overall a very good night...went home up $800 or so after 6 hours (which for a 4-8 game I think is quite good).

Isn't it funny how the cards fall SOMETIMES. Last week in one of our home games I got dealt pocket 2's. I'm always one to see a flop with pocket pairs but being late in position with everyone limping it was and easy call. Flop came 2 7 K rainbowed. Alright, all looked good at this point. The first guy, who's usually a "check check" player bets the max bet. Everyone else folds and I raise. He comes over the top and I call wondering about pocket 7's or K's. Turn comes a 7. Well needless to say he bets and this time I call it trying to figure how my set just blew up. River comes 2!! After back and forth of "you raise I raise " it was time. He proudly turned over his boat of K's and 7's made at the turn and I stared at the pot until just before he scraped it and turned over the quads. Hehe
