Here’s a question I hope someone will be able to answer. In the very cool British gangster movie Lock Stock and two smoking Barrels, the main character looses a enormous sum of money in a poker game. They held three cards and there were no community cards. He bet everything on a low pair and got beaten by someone (a cheat) with a slightly higher pair.
At first I thought that no such poker-variant existed, but then I found out about ‘guts’, a pretty cool game which is played with three cards and no community cards. However… there was raising and re-raising in the movie, and guts doesn’t have that.
So my question is, what variant were they playing or did they just make something up for the movie?

The game they played was 3 Card Brag, a very popular game in the UK, mainly by people who don't know how to play poker yet? I first learned this game in school, i was about 11 or 12 years old, and played it right up until a couple years ago, when i learned about hold em.
The game goes like this, each player is dealt 3 cards, player to laft of dealer starts the betting, he may choose to bet blind, or open, if he bets blind then the following players must pay double his bet if they have opened or they may call his bet if they are blind each player may decide to call blind for original sum, call open for double the blind bet, raise the bet blind, fold.
There are several variations to the betting, i.e. you cannot raise a blind player, you cannot call a blind player.
Betting continues until 2 players are left, they can continue to bet, call or raise until 1 player decides to "see" the other at which point the hands are turned over and a winner declared.
The hand ranks are, lowest 1st:
High card
A pair
Flush
Straight (run)
Stiff (a straight flush)
Prile (3 of a kind)
Notice that in 2 card brag a straight beats a flush, also in most games 3 of a kind 3's is the "nut" hand and cannot be beaten. Also, usually, a A23 beats QKA.
In the movie the guy bets all his money, (0.5 million? something like that) on a pair of 4's and was beaten by something like a pair of 6's
This was a totally ridiculously loose bet to make, and i put it down to artistic license.
by the way, in beag all bets do not have to be equal for showdown, i could bet against you say $5 you could call, we could keep doing this for a while until i started to get worried and i would have to pay the extra $5 to see you.
Brag means to boast, it's a game of bluff nd bravado, but usually, especially if playing limit raises, you will have to go to showdown.

Ok, so it is a real game. I may have to try it in a home game one time.
Thanks for the info!

3 card brag is quite fun, I also learnt it when I was about 12! You can play a great drinking game with brag cos it's so easy to play when u r pissed, the unit of bet is 'fingers' which are the amount of your pint you have to drink (a finger of a pint is the width of your finger on the pint glass......). Sometimes we played 'No-Limit Drinking Brag' which meant that you could go 'all-in' by raising a 'bolt'. If called, the loser had to 'bolt' their entire drink in one go. Man that got nasty sometimes! If at any point u folded, u had to drink to the level of ur bet at the fold and we allowed 1 change of up to 2 cards after the first round of betting. You should all try this, if you are old enuff of course :D
That rule on doubling the bet to call is something that I always grew up thinking was native to all forms of poker. It wasn't until I started watching Late Night Poker back in about 97 that I found out otherwise. When we played 5 card stud in the first year at uni, we STILL used that rule so now I'm wondering if it is native to stud. Can anyone confirm or deny this for me?
PS. Surely 2 card brag is just Texas Holdem with no community cards?

lol that sounds ermmmmmm like an excuse to get drunk!
2 card brag! lol!
3 card brag is 7 card stud without the other 4 cards?
there are lots of variations on brag, you can put a cap on the bets, you can play no limit, most games have an ante before cards are dealt.
you can play 5 card brag (best 3 cards from your 5) this is a crazy action game!
you can pretty much make up the rules to suit yourself lol, as long as everyone knows before play begins.
It is a very good game which is not nearly as widespread outside UK as it should be.
here's a site with rules/explanation

Yeah we used to play 5 card brag as students. Left the room once to get a beer and on my return found the two players both agreeing to bust the limit and start betting notes - of course it was AAA vs 333...
We didn't play it that A23 beat AQUA (QKA)...
The fun thing about brag is playing blind. You can push up the pot cheaply and then look at your cards.
