What is 'Pot Limit"

Posted Fri Sep 26, 2003 9:31 pm GMT by TheRightHand
I understood 'Pot Limit' to mean that players can make any bet up to the value if the pot. If this is true, why are some games listed as $1-$2 PL? If the betting limit is the value of the pot, isn't it contradictory to specify $1-$2 limits also?

This same question also applies to No Limit games. Why would they be listed as having a limit something like $5-$10 NL?

I believe the "limit" on NL games are the blinds.

Actually, I figured it out by myself. The betting limits work just like fixed limit games. By clicking the "Bet" or "Raise" button, you bet or raise by the pre-determined limit just like in fixed limit games. The difference is that when playing Pot Limit or No Limit games, you are also presented with a slider control that permits you to override the fixed limit if you choose.

What about the first-person-in, preflop? Small blind posts $1, big blind posts $2, so the 'pot' is only $3. Can the first-person-in preflop only raise it to $3? Or is there an exception here?

From what I can see, there is no exception. The person under the gun pre-flop can only match the value of the pot which, at that time, is the total of the small and big blinds.

In Pot Limit games, the amount that you need to call before you raise is considered part of the pot. The size of the pot defines the maximum you may raise over and above the amount to call (as opposed to the size of the total bet).

First person to bet pre-flop with $1 and $2 blinds has $2 to call, so the pot is considered $5. That person may raise up to $5 (mimimum raise would be the size of the BB) over the amount to call. Thus, the first person to play has options to fold, to call $2, or to raise (by $2-$5) to $4-$7.

I'm VERY interested in pl omaha! I'd like to get a semi-regular game going... I'm just trying to understand the betting structure. I think I almost got it. Do you know if there's a declare round in H/L split? Or is that left up to your house rules?

Declare is usually just a house rule. I think it's silly, if I'm playing Omaha, I want the whole pot :D

True... but when we play Hi/low games you can declare both ways.

Declare is NOT a normal action in a real game. You are playing both high and low every hand.
