"Best Poker Books" question

Posted Wed Sep 15, 2004 3:56 pm GMT by jwrussell
OK, I'm gonna take a stab at this as it seems to come up often. One caveat, I haven't done nearly enough reading yet to be able to recommend all of these from personal experience, but most stand out by their reputation alone.

First things first. There is no "Best Poker Book" in general. The question is way to vague. What stakes do you play? Limit, NL or PL? Cash or Tourney games? What Game (considering the forum I guess we'll assume Texas Hold'em)?
The following are by no means the only books out there. Heck, Amazon pulls up 23K+ titles when you search for poker. One category you may see that you think is missing is "Internet Poker". I left this out intentionaly. I haven't read any of the Internet poker books and I'm not sure I ever will. Poker on the interenet will continue to change at an intense rate so these books are going to become obsolete quickly. Further, if you read the correct books for the games you are playing, be it online or not, you will do fine.

General Poker:
The Theory of Poker-Sklansky Probably the only true "general poker" book. Not for beginners though.
Poker for Dummies-Harroch and Krieger No kidding, if you are a rank beginner, this is the book for you.

General Hold'em:
Super System-Brunson THE Bible of Hold'em.
Super System II-Brunson How can the sequal not be good?
Hold'em Poker-Sklansky
The Complete Book of Hold'em Poker-Gary Carson
Winner's Guide to Texas Hold'em-Ken Warran

Low Limit Hold'em:
Winning Low Limit Hold'em-Lee Jones For a long time the low limit bible.
Small Stakes Hold'em-Ed Miller This one is new and is getting rave reviews. It has a more aggressive and odds focused style than WLLHE.
I would recommend reading both.

Advanced Hold'em Texts:
Hold'em for Advanced Players-Sklansky/Malmuth Didn't see that one coming did you?

Tournament Hold'em:
Championship No Limit and Pot Limit Hold'em-McEvoy/Cloutier
Tournament Poker for Advanced Players-Sklansky

Psychology and stuff:
Caro's book of Tells-Caro
Psychology of Poker-Schoonmaker
The Tao of Poker-Phillips
Getting the Best of it-Sklansky

Thinking of going pro?:
The Biggest Game in Town-Alverez
Big Deal-Holden
Postively Fifth Street-McManus

So there you go. Hopefully this helps.

Without a doubt I missed some excellent texts, so feel free to add on folks.

"Poker nation" by Andy Bellin was a pretty good book somewhat in the vein of positively fifth street. . . and don't forget the Book of Hoyle.

Actually, I've heard Sklansky's Tournament book isn't very good because it's so general. In my opinion, tournament books should be extremely specific. There's millions of scenarios in NL Hold 'Em tournament games (which Cloutier's book and the follow-up practice scenario book cover), and I don't think strategies from 7-stud, razz, or draw tournaments necessarily cross-over to Hold'em and vice versa.

I would also add Ray Burgess' "Stepping Up" to the Psychology books if you play low-limit games.

Play Poker Like The Pros - Phil Hellmuths book - an excellent entry into the game - his style works very well and I've seen positive results just from playing the power of the raise and his top 10 hands.
